All the buttons, timers, and the hard-to-read manual might look terrifying at first. But these machines are the easiest to operate.

There are mainly two types of washing machines — fully automatic and semi-automatic. The fully automatic washing machines can be further classified into two types. They are– front load and top load.

In this article, we will know how to use a certain type of washing machine in easy and simple steps.

How to use Your Washing Machine

Washing machines are very convenient and can be used very easily. But, you need some time before getting adjusted with how it functions. Some of the things that you need to learn while using a washing machine  are:

  • how to operate the machine.
  • Which kind of fabric softener and detergent is perfect for the clothes as well as the machine.
  • How can you retain the color of your clothes as well as not to mix colors of your clothes.

There are some steps that you must follow to wash clothes in a washing machine. The steps are:

  • Separate your clothes based on compatibility. You should only put those clothes inside the washing machine that are compatible with them. For doing that you need to check the tags present inside the clothes. If the tags specify “hand wash only”, you should never put them inside the machine.
  • Separate your colors based on colors. It is best if you wash clothes with white or light colors separately. This does not allow the clothes to get stained from dark colors and keeps them safe.
  • Set up the washing cycle accordingly. Washing cycle determines the speed of the motor of the machine. This determines how fast the machine spins. You can select normal cycle, heavy cycle, permanent cycle, delicate cycle, and many more.
  • Set the temperature for the wash. You can choose cold water or hot water depending on your needs. Also, while setting the temperature, choose the temperature that would not affect the fabric.
  • Pour the detergent as well as the fabric softener. Most of the washing machines are compatible with powder detergent as well as liquid detergent. You will find detergents that are compatible with your machine from both online and offline markets.
  • Load your clothes inside the machine.
  • Start the washing machine.

Fully Automatic

The washing machines that are fully automatic are easier to use. It also lessens your load. A fully automatic machine washes and dries in the same compartment. They take the required amount of water and detergent automatically.

Once you load the machine and start the wash cycle all you need to do is wait for clean and washed clothes.

They can be classified into two types- front load and top load. Let’s discuss them further.

Top Load

As the name suggests, these machines are loaded from the top. The opening for the clothes to put inside the machine is situated at the top. This makes your job easier. You don’t need to bend to put the clothes inside the machine.

A top-loaded washing machine is very simple to operate. It has fewer knobs and buttons in them.

Below are the steps that you need to follow for using a top-load washing machine.

Step 1: Add the detergent

For a top load washing machine, the first thing you need to do is add the detergent in the detergent box. This is done to keep the detergent close to the source of water. It will allow the detergent to dissolve properly in the water at the start of the wash.

Step 2: Add the clothes

After you have added the detergent in the detergent box, it is time to add the clothes. Make sure that you do not overload the machine. If you overload the machine, the wash would not be proper and your clothes will not clean properly. The loading capacity of any type of washing machine is mentioned in their description.

Step 3: Select the cycle depending on the labels of fabric care.

Before you select a cycle, always check the tags of the clothes that you have put inside the machine. You will often see that the tags specify the requirements i.e. water temperature, detergent, etc that is most suitable for the fabric or cloth.

If you are unable to find any recommendation, it is better to go with the cold temperature of water.

Step 4: Unload immediately

Once the wash is completed, unload the clothes as soon as possible from the machine. This is done to ensure that the clothes remain fresh after the wash. It is best to unload immediately. But if it is not possible try to do it within 2 hours of the wash.

Front Load

As the name suggests, these machines have their door situated in the front. You need to put in the clothes first. Once the door is closed and secured, only then water will fill in the barrel.

These types of machines are heavier. The number of knobs as well as buttons present in these machines are more than top-load machines. The washer is heavier compared to the dryer because of the amount of water used.

This is why the dryer is placed above the washer. The steps you need to follow to use a front load washing machine are given below.

Step 1: Load the laundry

Once you are done checking the dose of the detergent, fill the machine with the clothes. Remember to leave adequate space in the machine for the clothes to rotate properly during the wash.

Step 2: Use correct dose of detergent

Before you pour the detergent inside the detergent compartment, make sure it’s sufficient, not too much, not too less. You will find the correct dose written in the back of the box of detergent. You will need more detergent if you are using hard water, your clothes are dirty, or the load is heavy.

Step 3: Add detergent in the dispenser drawer

Pour the detergent inside the dispenser drawer. Keep in mind to not exceed the maximum limit. Then the clothes will not wash properly. If you end upsetting more detergent suds might come out of the machines. So, select the dose mindfully.

Step 4: Choose the appropriate temperature

Once you have added detergent, now is the time to set the temperature. For that, it is best to check the tags of the clothes. Usually, you will find that the manufacturer has specified the temperature for the cloth to be washed without damaging it. It will protect the fabric of the cloth. If you have clothes of delicate fabrics, like satin, lace, go for the lowest temperature.

Step 5: Select the appropriate spin cycle

Once you are done selecting the temperature, now you need to select the spin cycle. Different fabrics require different cycles. Delicate fabrics require a slow cycle, while fabrics such as cotton need fast cycles.

Step 6: Close the door and press start

Once you have completed all the above steps, close the door properly. Make sure that the door is locked and the press “go or start”.

Semi-Automatic Washing Machine

Unlike automatic washing machines, they require a bit more work from you. These machines have two different sections. One of the sections is for washing and the other is for drying.

They are also referred to as semi-manual machines. This is because of the fact that you manually need to put the clothes in the washer followed by in the dryer.

Step 1: Once you put the clothes in the washer, you need to add water as well as detergent depending on the laundry size.

Step 2: Start the cycle and set the timer depending on the load and the type of cloth you are washing. Delicate fabrics require less time in washing whereas heavier clothes like bed sheet curtains can require as much as 30 mins of wash cycle including the pre-soaking period.

Step 3: As the timer stops, drain the water. You can start another wash cycle similarly if you require.

Step 4: Once the washing procedure of washing is completed, you need to take the clothes out of the washer and then put them inside the dryer.

Compared to automatic washing machines, they are cheaper.
