The 10 Best Geyser in India 2022 : Ultimate Buying Guide

Updated by

Best Geysers

Now-a-days water heaters have become one of the must-have appliances in our home, especially during cold seasons. Because, traditional methods like heating water over gas stoves are not only dangerous but also uncomfortable.

Geysers come in two different models – storage Geysers and Instant Geysers.

When compared to instant geysers, storage water heaters provide hot water without any pause. However, they are bit expensive and take more wall mounting space.

While purchasing a best geyser, you have to consider below important points…

  • Capacity – Usually storage geysers have capacity range of 6 to 35 liters. If you want to hot water for cleaning kitchen utensils, then 6 to 8 liters capacity is enough. But for bucket bathing 8 to 10 liters is sufficient. And for shower bathing, you will require geyser with more than 15 liters’ capacity.
  • Water Tank Material – Most common materials used are copper, thermostatic or stainless steel. Stainless steel material comes with anti-corrosive and glass coating which prevents corrosion and electrochemical reactions. And insulation is much better and requires less maintenance.
  • Wattage – Most of the electric water heaters present in Indian market have 1500 – 3000 watts range. The thumb rule is – higher the wattage, water gets heated more quickly.

While these are the three important factors, there are a lot more that you need to consider. We have provided detailed information of them in our “Geyser Buying Guide“. Apart from that, we have also picked out the best water heaters in India after carefully analyzing quality, durability and service.

Now let us jump right into the reviews. If you have any questions or queries regarding geysers or water heaters, feel free to mention them in our Best Geyser Comments Section below. Our product team is always listening and will get back to you ASAP.

How to Select Best Geyser in India? | Geyser Buying Guide

Before purchasing any product, it is very crucial to understand the requirements and have proper knowledge on features – because without it, you will end up with unsuitable product and waste money as well.

The same implies for geysers as well. Below, we have gathered all the information required to analyses geysers as per your requirements.

1. Size or Capacity

Geyser Capacity

This factor depends on the usage, number of people in the house, purpose and others. For instance, if you have a large family, then purchasing a geyser with higher capacity or providing hot water quickly for longer period is recommended. However, if you are a small family or just an individual, then it is better to invest in a small sized geyser.

To make things a bit easy for you, we have provided a table below representing family size, ideal capacity, type of geyser and others.

Now that you have a clear idea on which size suits your requirements, we shall further discuss of the types and other factors in the rest of the article.

2. Type of Geysers – Based on Energy Source

Geyser Types

Based up on the source of energy, geysers are categorized into three types – gas, electric and solar. Below we have mentioned a detailed description of each category for your knowledge.

  • Electric geysers:

As the name implies, these geysers consume electricity for providing hot water. Working principle of electric geysers is actually very simple – electric energy is converted into heat through heating elements to increase the temperature. Some of these appliances in the market come with smart features like time delay, requirement temperature and automation.

These water heaters are perfect for people living in apartments and rented houses. When compared to gas water heaters, electric ones can heat the water at higher temperature.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Smaller in sizeNo hot water during power cuts
Easy to maintain and installTemperature rise and flow rates are limited as power output is limited due to wiring load capability
Not expensiveBut operational cost
can be higher than other types
Most popular for home use

These water heaters consume natural gas like LPG (liquid Petroleum Gas) or propane gas to operate. . They have the capability of heating water quickly when compared to electric geysers.

While installing a gas water heater, it is important to fix the device behind the LPG gas cylinder in order to provide thorough gas supply through pipelines.

Most of the gas water heaters are either instant or tankless. Gas geysers are perfect for installing in the kitchen as it is where you will be placing the gas cylinder. However, if you are placing it in the bathroom, then make sure to place the cylinder outside for safety purposes. As gas cylinder emits carbon monoxide fumes, ventilation is very crucial.

When compared to electric water heaters, the operating and maintenance costs of gas geysers are cheaper. Installation of gas geyser is a bit difficult as they occupy large space and require separate gas connection as well. And safety is a bit concern if they are not made up of high quality materials. They don’t last more than 6 – 7 years.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Doesn’t get affected by power cuts and voltage fluctuationsGas leakage and carbon monoxide poisoning can be dangerous
Due to high energy content, water gets heated faster at higher temperature possible
Much affordable operation and maintenance costs. Up to 66% maintenance cost can be saved.
As water is not stored, no wastage of heat or energy
With just turn of tap, unlimited supply of instant hot water without any limits
  • Solar Geysers

If you are living in an independent house, then solar geysers are the best choice. These machines work by absorbing heat from sun rays through roof-mounted solar panels. The energy from sun rays is converted into heat and transferred to water tank where heating is performed.

With this option, you don’t have to waste money on electricity or gas to provide hot water for the whole family. The initial cost is a bit higher than other options. However, it will pay off in the long term. Solar water heaters are not suitable for apartments and tenants.

Some of the geysers present in the market also work on gas or electricity as backup in emergency purposes. The only disadvantage of solar water heaters is – they are compatible only if you own home with open space or open terrace. Also these appliances may not be effective in winters and monsoons when sunshine is very little.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Saves a lot of moneyMuch expensive than electric gas heaters
Need more space like terrace to install the solar panels
Available in larger capacities like 100 liters. So suitable for only large families

3. Types of Water Heaters – Based on Storage

If based on storage capability – water heaters are categorized into two types – storage geysers and tankless (or instant) geysers.

  • Storage Geyser / Water heater

As the name suggests, storage geysers have a water tank that store the heated water for certain period of time. When you switch on the water heater, certain amount of water (based on water capacity) is heated and store. The temperature of the stored water is maintained through thermostat for certain amount of time.

Most of the water heaters present in the market have two kinds of water tanks – stainless steel and copper. Steel tanks are expensive, last longer and requires less maintenance. Copper tanks are even more costlier, however work much better.

Different models come with different capacities, you can choose based on your requirement. If your family is small, then 20-liter capacity is good enough. However, if your family is large, then 25L – 35L capacity is required.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
They are least expensiveStored water loses heat after certain time
Operate with minimum maintenanceWater has to be reheated which is waste of energy

Instant Geysers don’t have separate storage tank capacity like storage geysers. They will provide instant hot water whenever you need. In instant geysers, once you switch on, the water is heated quickly and delivered, and once you switch off, it will stop heat water immediately. If you want hot water again, then you have to again switch on the device. Though the name states instant, getting hot water can take a few minutes depending on the distance between heater and tap.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Occupies small space for mountingExpensive than other storage type
Maximum 10-liter capacityInstallation is a bit tricky with initial costs
Hot water is delivered immediately from outlet
Best for kitchen utility washing and hand wash
Depending on the people in your family, you may need more than one
More energy efficient than other storage types
Suitable for small families

4. Material of the Water Tank

Inside of Geyser

Typically, materials used for water tank heaters are either copper, thermoplastic or stainless steel. These materials ensure efficiency and safe output.

  • Copper: It is one of the most used materials to build tanks for water heaters. As copper is a good conductor of heat you can get a quick response in heating the water. However, it causes corrosion, loss of heat and regular maintenance.
  • Stainless steel: Commonly used in most of the modern day water heaters, stainless steel tanks are usually coated with anti-corrosive powder and glass lining to keep the tank free from corrosion and other electrochemical reactions. The insulation is better and also requires little to no maintenance.
  • Thermoplastic: A lesser known material for a tank. However, thermoplastic tanks have a better non-corrosive feature when compared to copper. On the downside, they are not insulated.

5. Anti-Scale And Anti Corrosive

While purchasing a geyser, it is very important to check whether the water tank has anti-corrosive and anti-scale lining. However, before that, analyze whether your water is hard or soft. In some parts of India, quality of water is extremely bad. Hard water can easily corrode and build-up calcium scales in the water tank – which can damage the heating efficiency. And you may have to replace the water heater once in a year.

To solve the corrosion problem, manufacturer’s coat the inside of the water heater tank with anti-corrosive materials. Some of them include porcelain enamel glass, glass lined, vitreous enamel, blue silicone enamel, titanium and several others.

Steel-based alloys and glass coatings provide good insulation, less corrosive, maintain original surface for longer time. Placing magnesium rods in the center can keep corrosive salts at bay. For preventing any damage, you can use water softeners – as they convert hard water to soft water.

6. Insulation

In order to reduce energy consumption, geysers are wrapped in heat insulation. Apart from that, insulation also speeds up the heating process and maintain operating temperature. Thicker the insulation is, lesser the heat loss will be. Geysers present in the market have different insulation ratings. However, for more effective results, you can add more layers of extra insulation outside the heater as well.

Most commonly used geyser insulation is fiber glass wool that is fixed with straps or trap. When the burner is used, the insulation should block combustion gas outflow and air flow. Some modern geysers come with PUF (polyurethane foam). They are much better than glass wool as it has the capability of retaining water temperature for a long time. This not only saves 40% energy but also the save money as well.

7. Pressure

Pressure Safety Valve

If you own a flat or live in a multi-storied high rise building, then these apartments have high pressure pumps to ensure water reaches every flat. If the water pressure inside geyser gets too high, then it can lead to issues like leakage. The pressure in the geyser depends on pressure of tap providing the water and water expansion inside while heating. Usually, the pressure is calculated in bars.

An ideal water heater with more than 6 bars can withstand high water pressure. Any lower than that, leakages and tank bursts can be expected. Most of the modern day geysers come with a safety valve to depressurize the water within the tank by releasing some amount of water. Glass lined coated inner tank is more suitable as they will resist high pressure.

8. Heating Element

Heating element is also as important as the tank material. Most brands make copper heating elements with a coating use to prevent corrosion.  Some manufacturers use glass coated Incology heating element; they are considered to be the best in resting corrosion and the most expensive ones. They last for about 4 years with hard water source. Another popular heating element is glass coated copper heating element; they are not so expensive but are quite good. Copper coated heating element lasts for about 2 years even in hard water source areas.

9. Auto-Off Feature

Most of the modern water tank heaters have a smart feature – automatic shut off. Sometimes, people forget turning off the water heater. In such situations, this factor is beneficial. It helps to turn off the geyser by preventing unnecessary power consumption.

10. Power Consumption

Energy Efficiency

Electrical water heaters add up to 15% of your monthly electricity bill depending upon the weather conditions and consumption. Although most of the household appliances are energy efficient, it is still essential for you to understand the amount of power your water heater consumes in order to make some savings.

All the branded water heaters are BEE rated. Look at the BEE label and study the annual power consumption in units. You can then cross check that with this simple formula

Units consumed = Water volume X Temperature difference X Cost of electricity.

Other than this, there are a few factors you have to consider deciding the energy consumption of the water heater.

  • Input water: The rate of heating depends of the initial water temperature which will change with season, also the power consumption.
  • Purpose of water: needless to say, the purpose of water usage plays an important role in energy consumption. Large quantity of water requires more power.
  • Thermostat setting: all the modern electric water heaters come with a thermostat that lets you set a temperature which is further maintains using the auto on/shut off feature.
  •  Auto-off: a geyser with auto off feature shuts the device off after reaching the desired temperature which prevents unnecessary power consumption.
  • Heat retention: although most of the modern heaters do come with this feature, this is a less significant feature deciding the efficiency of the product. The more the heater retains the heat, the less power it consumes.

11. Wattage

Usually, electric water heaters best operate at 1500-2000 watts. Some branded geysers come with increased power to 3000 watts which draws more power over a short period of time. A geyser with high flow rates (100L/hr) will draw more power than water heaters with lower flow rates

12. Ratings

All the water heaters are marked with a BEE star rating by the Government of India. Higher the number of stars (on a scale of 5), the more energy efficient the device is. Star rating is something one has to consider in order to save money and time on the longer run. 5-star rating geyser is more energy efficient and works on much lesser electricity than a geyser with 4-star rating. Always consider buying any home appliance with 4 or higher star rating.

13. Mount

Mounting Type

Vertical mount water heaters are the most common type of heaters found in the market. Horizontal heaters called H-wall water heaters are a new entry to the market that are suitable for areas with low ceilings, false ceilings or attics. Make sure your bathroom/kitchen has about 2 feet of space to fit a vertical mount water heater.

14. Build and Material

Now that we know the importance of the material used in building the inner tank, let us look at the limitations set in building the outer body.  The outer body can be built using plastic. However, a sturdy material such as ABS is preferred. The plastic even helps in moulding the heater to the desired shape and design.

15. Additional Features

It is always good to have some additional features like good design, adjustable knob and others to make the bathing experience even more convenient. Our body cannot handle too hot water, so you don’t require hot water that exceeds 50 degrees Celsius. That is why, it is better to have customized heat temperature adjustment in a geyser. This will prevent the struggle of mixing hot and cold water to get desirable hotness. And moreover, it saves  electricity bill as well.

16. Durability and Maintenance

The durability of water heater represents the ability to withstand and function effectively even in unpleasant conditions. The durability of the geyser ensures long-lasting nature without any damage to the product. Moreover, the maintenance of the geyser depends on geyser type and frequent usage. To maintain geyser in good working condition, clean the tank once in every week to prevent from rusting.

17. After Sales Service

Geysers are one of the important household appliances. When you buy a new one, it is always advisable to purchase from a reputable brand which offers quick repairs and replacements in case any damage occurs.

18. Warranty

Just like any other household appliance, warranty of a water heater is important as well. Most of the high brand geysers come with 4 to 5-years warranty on water tank and 2 to 3 years on other parts. During the warranty period, if the product doesn’t work, you can get free replacement or repair work done without paying.

19. Expense

Though we have mentioned this factor in the last, it is equally important to others provided in the buying guide. If you’re on low-budget, go with the entry-level models that best matches with your heating or storage requirements. Otherwise, go with top-notch water geysers that come at expensive rates.

Geyser Guide

General Tips before buying a geyser

  • Electric geysers with copper tank should not be used at home with high water supply pumps as high water pressure can damage the geyser along with the tank.
  • When installing a gas heater place the LPG gas cylinder up, outside of the bathroom with a proper leakage proof pipe. The gas heater emits Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas so there should be proper ventilation system.
  • Your electric heaters should have an auto cut-off feature that efficiently shuts down the supply of power as and when the water reaches 60℃. Any further heating can cause internal pressure to build up and outbursts.
  • Buy only those heaters that carry a genuine BIS/ISI certification. This guarantees that the product has undergone all the necessary trials and assurance checks.
  • It is advisable to hire a professional to install the appliance as slight negligence might risk the life of the product and yours.
  • Always check for the manufacturer’s warranty information at the time of purchasing.
  • Shock proof and rustproof -ABS Plastic body
  • Fire Retardant Cable: reduces the flammability of the cables to prevent any chances short circuit.
  • A safety valve- to discharge excess water when the pressure or temperature exceeds safe limits.
  • Auto-On/Off- to automatically turn the device off and on when needed to prevent electricity wastage.
  • BEE star rating- higher the star rating more the energy savings.
  • Safety measures to follow when using a geyser
  • Children should be stay away from geyser while it is on otherwise they can burn their hands with hot water
  • Don’t use other electrical device in the bathroom when using a geyser
  • Flush out the sediment build-up regularly to avoid unnecessary electricity consumption.
  • Never keep geyser on for a long period of time.
  • Operating at higher temperature levels causes more electricity consumption. By setting the temperature from 60 degree C to 50 degree C you can actually save 18% more electricity.
  • Water heater wastes electricity when you left unused water inside the tank. Always switch the geyser on before using and switch it off when you are done.
  • Most of the geysers have by-default thermostat settings at 60 degree C. Please be careful while using it as this high temperature can cause serve damage and burns to human skin. Always mix cold water with the hot water to lower down the temperature.

Some Frequently Asked Questions?

1. What are the best Water heater brands?

Best brand ensures quality, efficiency and good after sales service. From so many brands here comes the best ones- AO smith, Havells, Crompton, Bajaj , Racold, American Microni, V-Guard, and Kenstar.  They offer geysers with capacity from 10L-35 L. They are available in Amazon or Flipkart. Some of them provide free installation. Even if it is paid they are always better than a calling local plumber.

2. Can I install the Geyser myself?

We never recommend you to install a geyser yourself until you are not a professional. We will also advise you to avoid local plumber as they don’t follow safety measures and often not very professional. It is better if you seek help for an Authorized Service Center. Some manufacturers provide installation service when you purchase a new item. For installation you will need some additional things like 2 steel ribbed pipes, 1 brass angle valve, a connection nipple and little other stuffs.

3. How you can make your geyser a smart geyser?

With home automations you can control your geyser with a smart phone without getting up early from your bed. All you have to do is to plug the Oakter compatible geyser to the Oakter smart plug and schedule a time to turn on/off automatically. Like if you plan to take a bath at 8 am in the morning you can configure the Oakter App to automatically turn the geyser on at 7:30 am, by so you will get hot water as soon as you enter the bathroom. It will also turn the geyser off after reaching the desired temperature set by you.

4. How wattage is related to heating time?

Wattage of a geyser is directly related to the time taken for heating water. The more the wattage the faster will be the heating. For instance a 4 K.W geyser will heat the water faster than a 2 K.W geyser. It can prevent hot water wastage; however, greater wattage will also increase the monthly electricity bill.

5.What is the best geyser for hard water?

Hard water has salts like calcium, magnesium in dissolved state. They can cause corrosion and form rust inside the walls of the geyser. If you have hard water supply at home look for a geyser with a corrosive resistant tank and glass coated copper Incoloy heating element for greater durability and longer life span. You can also install a water softener that will turn hard water into soft water before passing it to the geyser.

6.How long does a water heater last?

Depending upon the usage, brand and capacity, electric water heaters usually last at least up to 10 years. According to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors a traditional storage water heater can last up to 10 years depending on the water hardness, daily usage, build-quality, installation and preventative maintenance.
As it starts aging it gives hints that it needs replacement soon. For example, rusty water can turn the water heater rusting inside out causing great damage with time. Sedimentation at the bottom of the tank makes boom-bang sounds coming out from the geyser. The sediment build-up forms calcite that is heated and re-heated regularly destroys your water heater in a way it starts losing its efficiency sooner than what is expected. Water leakage can be the ultimate goodbye sign of a geyser- but look for easy repairable loose connections and fittings, leaks in pipes.

7. Is it normal for the electric water heater to make noise?

Yes, a faint noise, once the water inside the tank has reached the desired temperature is normal. However, if you hear banging, hissing, or knocking sounds, call the customer service. This might be due to the unwanted limescale deposits in the tank. You might even want to check the heating element.

8. Is it normal for a gas heater to make noise?

If you hear sounds like popping, hissing and crushing it is due to the sediment build-up inside the tank. Hard water which contains high level of calcium and magnesium salts crates a calcite layer at the bottom of the tank. When the moisture between the sediment layer and the geyser wall starts to boil it makes such noise. You need the flush the geyser to get rid of all the sediment build-up.

9. How do I know if I need to replace the water heater?

You should observe whether the heater is supplying surplus hot water or is losing out on it every few minutes. Steady supply of hot water at the desired temperature shows that your heater is fit to run for a few more years. However, if the temperature fluctuates or the water output has sediments in it, it’s definitely time to change your water heater.

10. Why is my heater releasing water?

It is common for the modern water heaters to release a small amount of water now and then. This is to maintain the internal water pressure in the tank. A multifunctional safety valve keeps the water pressure and temperature in check and prevents the tank from leakages and bursts.

11. How to turn off a leaking water heater?

First and foremost thing to do is to shut down the water supply to the unit. Every water heater comes with an instruction manual when purchased. Depending upon the brand, the steps may vary but make sure you study the manual and follow the instructions carefully. In case it doesn’t work out, call the helpline number.

12. Why is my water heater leaking?

One might notice water leaking from the pipes, inlet valve or the bottom tank. Leaking pipes indicate that it is time for its replacement. If the water is leaking from the top/inlet valve, it indicates installation issues while water leakage from the bottom indicates a crack in the inner tank. This would be the time to either utilize your warranty and replace the tank or replace the water heater.

13. Why isn’t my water heater producing enough hot water like before?

If your water heater is running out of hot water quickly or is producing lukewarm water, it could be due to two main reasons. One- the heating element or the thermostat must have burned out. Two- over the years the inner tank must be clogged with sediments and scale buildups.

14. Off late my water heater has been giving out smelly water. What should I do?

Smelly water could be due to the sedimentation and limescale buildup in the water tank. With heavy chlorination of the inlet water, one can observe unwanted microbial and mineral buildup within the tank. This might cause the foul smell in the water. Regular flushing of the tank keeps the tank clean and safe for further use.

Conclusion…

    1. Most of the geysers come with 2000watts power consumption. If you want 1000 or 1500-watt model, then you have to choose immersion water heaters.

  1. Hi Tej, Thanks for the review. I was using Crompton Solarium dlx heater for 2 years. Recently tank started leaking and technicians told it’s not worth to fix the tank as it might leak again due to multiple reasons. They told me the cause for the tank leakage is due to high pressure of water flow (which I will be controlling now with valve). I need you to suggest me good geyser with storage capacity of 10 – 15Litres (not interested with big capacity). It can be 4 or 5 ratings. My ground water is hard and salty. Please suggest one. Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Indranil, Yes. With 3000 Watt motor capacity and pressure of 8 bars, this product is capable of providing hot water within minutes. However, the customer service of AO smith brand is very poor.

  2. I want to buy 15 liter AO Smith Vertical Geyser. Which one is the best to buy? My choice is HSE-SES. Also I am confused whether 3000 watt is better option like SGS Green series. Will it affect House hold wiring or electricity bills compared to 2000 watt AO Smith geyser. Please suggest.

    1. Hi Indranil, Household wiring doest have any effect. However, you can expect higher power bills with 3000 Watt compared to 2000 Watt.

  3. There are five members in my family. I have already solar water heater in my bathroom but I want to installe instant electric heater for cleaning dishes in my kitchen. So give me advice which is better for me 1L or 3L..?

    1. Hi,

If you are a 5 member family, that means that the amount of dishes you wash would also be significantly higher compared to normal households. Instant water heaters will give you hot water very fast and the volume of water you need to wash the dishes of 5 members would be slightly higher. It is best that you go with a 3 litre instant water heater and Bajaj Flora would be a perfect fit for you. You can check for the best price available over here: Bajaj Flora Water Heater

      1. Dear Sir, We are a family of five. But usually, we are too and other three members join us in vacation. Budget is no problem. Our region has hard water. You suggest 25 litres storage geyser with latest model and features.

        1. We recommend going for American Micronic Ami-Whm3-25Ldx water heater. We have provided more information on it features in the above mentioned article.

    1. Hi Mahesh,

If you are comparing between Smith, Crompton and Havells, I would suggest that you go with A.O Smith, hands down. The 15 litre variant of its horizontal geyser is rated one of the best and has satisfied a lot of consumers. Crompton and Havells too have similar and good quality features and build, they seem to have a small slack when it comes to satisfying customers.
Another option you could consider instead of A.O Smith is the v-guard victo 15 litres water heater. This one too gives the others a tough competition with free installation and other features that compete with the best in the market. Hope this helps.

    1. Hi Krishan,

Gas geyser has no storage tank, once you open the Tap you get hot water in 10 Secs. Gas Gyeezer has a tank which passes 6 Litres of water at one time.

  4. Thanks for providing great information that will helpful for people’s to get the right water heater as per their needs. But I want to know about exact temperature for heating water and 2kw enough for electricity saving purpose.

    1. Hey,

Thanks for your comment. Water heaters can heat water up to 60°C. Ideal temperature for bathing is 37°C anything above 37°C feels hot. Wattage is directly propotional to how fast they heat water, but not the electricity bill. For Example 3KW water heater heats the water faster than 2KW.

  5. Thanks for providing great information that will helpful for people to get the right water heater as per their needs.

  6. Hello,I’m from chennai and the salt content in our water is way too high. I have tried a few geysers in the past but none of them worked for more than 1 year or so. Which one would you suggest for our family?

    1. Hello Selvam, saline water was a problem in the functioning of geysers for long but almost all of the modern day come with internal tank linings which deal with water salinity. But for your specific query, I would suggest that you go ahead for AO Smith HSE-SDS-15 litres version.

The heating element of this geyser is lined with glass and thus it reduces the salination and sedimentation formation along the geyser bottom. You can use it for a long time without hassle and it is ideal for big families too. Hope this helps.

  7. Hi , I want to buy an geyser for my home. Bajaj Flora Instant Water Heater vs Crompton Solarium Instant Water Heater, which one should I buy for a family of 3?

    1. Hi Both of these products are a great fit for a small family as both of them have a 3 litre capacity and are perfect for home usage. If you are looking at a longer usage period, go for the Bajaj Flora which has a 5 year warranty period for the inner tank and a 2 year overall warranty. A crompton solarium is also a perfect buy too.
