How to choose the right comforter?
Since there are so many options available in the market, it might be a quite confusing task to buy the best comforter for your home. To make it easier for you, we have mentioned all the factors that you should consider.
1. Comforter Fillings
There are different types of materials that are used as filling materials. You can find many options in both natural and synthetic fillings.
Material | Warmth | Breathable | Hypoallergenic | Light Weight | Ease of Washing |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Microfiber | Moderate | Less breathable | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Polyester | Moderate | Less breathable | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Cotton | Moderate | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Wool | High | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
Down | High | Yes | No | Yes | No |
Silk | Moderate | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
a) Synthetic Fillings:
Polyester and microfiber are the most popular synthetic options that are used as comforter fillings. They are readily available and you can find them at a much affordable price when compared to the ones with natural fillings.
- Polyester
If you have a tight budget, you can go ahead with the polyester fillings. Not only it is durable but it also works great to keep you warm and cozy during the winter season. The polyester material traps heat and moisture effectively. However, you might not feel comfortable while using these comforters during warmer seasons.
Polyester is easy to maintain and does not lose its shape easily. This means that you can use it for a long period when compared to other materials.
Another advantage of buying a comforter with polyester filling is you can wash it easily at your home. You can even wash it in the washing machine and then dry it in a tumble dryer. Since it is wrinkle-proof, the comforter dries very quickly too.
However, unlike cotton, the polyester material tends to absorb more oil, and thus, it is more prone to stains and it might get difficult to get rid of them.
Also, when compared to natural materials, synthetic material is more likely to pill if washed frequently. Thus, if you have any skin issues or allergies, it might not be the best option for you.
Synthetic also attracts static electricity. So, rather than buying 100% polyester comforters, we would suggest you to choose a blended fabric as an alternative.
- Microfiber
Microfiber is composed of fine fibers and is much finer than silk or human hair. Even though microfibers are thin, they are extremely strong.
Microfiber comforters are light, soft, breathable, and offer great insulation properties. Since they are woven using advanced technologies in a laboratory, the fibers become extremely tight. Due to this, they are good at repelling stains. Even if the comforter is stained, you can simply wipe it off and you won’t notice any traces left behind.
Another advantage of buying a microfiber comforter is its ability to dry faster. Even though it hardly takes any time to wash and dry these sheets, one thing that you need to remember is microfibers have a tendency to shrink a bit when you wash it for the first time. Sometimes, the color of the sheet fades too.
Since these sheets are tightly woven, they are very strong and durable. They last for a long time without compromising with the texture, feel, and comfort level of the comforter.
It is a great option for those who suffer from allergies or any other skin-related issues. They are a bit costly though.
b) Natural Fillings
Comforters with natural fillings are also considered as a great choice if you are looking forward to buying a comforter that is really warm. Some of the most popular natural filling options include cotton, wool, and down. The qualities of these comforters are much better when compared to the synthetic ones and are more durable too.
Comforters with natural fillings offer better breathability and are softer than the synthetic comforters. Let’s learn more about them in detail.
- Cotton
Cotton is considered as one of the most popular choices amongst those who live in a warmer climate. If you are looking forward to buying a summer comforter, this can be the best choice for you.
Since cotton is a natural and breathable fiber, it takes the moisture away from your body and lets you stay cool. It is a versatile material and can be used in the winter season too and keep you warm during colder nights too.
Another benefit of using cotton comforter is it is long-lasting and unlike other materials, the quality of the material improves over time. As we all know that cotton becomes softer as it ages, it takes care of your skin too.
It is very easy to wash and get rid of stains from the comforter.
However, one of the disadvantages of using a cotton filling is, the material is prone to wrinkles if not washed properly. Other materials like polyester don’t wrinkle as much as cotton. Cotton comforters are costly too than the polyester ones.
- Wool
As wool is a natural fiber, it is breathable and helps in maintaining moderate body temperature. Unlike other materials, wool does not trap humidity in the same way. If you have a sensitive skin type, buying a wool comforter can be beneficial to you as the material is hypoallergenic and fight against dust mites naturally.
It can be used in both the summer and winter seasons. During the winter season, the comforter can help you stay warm throughout the night. Along with this, it also absorbs moisture that prevents you from feeling sweaty and uncomfortable all the time.
Wool is a soft, lightweight, and flame-retardant material. Even though it is on an expensive side, wool comforters offer effective and long-lasting results.
However, they are a bit fragile and it’s better if you don’t wash it at home. In the case of staining, you should give it for dry cleaning. If it is not possible for you to give it for dry cleaning, wash it at home with a gentle detergent and lukewarm water. Don’t use strong or harsh chemicals as it can damage the fabric.
- Down
Down has been one of those materials that are being used since ages in bedding. It is famous for its natural insulation properties.
Down is naturally warm and it is quite difficult to replicate the same properties in comforters that are made using synthetic materials.
Air gets trapped in between the pieces of down in the filling to provide that level of warmth that no other material can provide. The material is still breathable and can be used in the summer season as well.
The only disadvantage of down is it requires a high amount of maintenance and is expensive when compared to synthetic material. You cannot wash a down comforter in the washing machine. Also, you will have to go through the list of instructions provided by the manufacturer properly to ensure the comforter is not damaged.
Unlike wool or silk, down does not have the natural capability to fight against dust mites. Thus, if you are prone to any type of skin allergies (or if you are allergic to feathers), you must avoid buying it.
- Silk
Silk is famous for the soft and luxurious feel that it offers. Silk comforters are very light in weight and are comfortable to use. They are also naturally hypoallergenic and thus, are a popular choice amongst those who have a sensitive skin type.
Since silk is a breathable material, it helps in maintaining healthy and moderate body temperature.
Similar to wool, silk is also very expensive and requires a high amount of maintenance. It requires a lot of care and cannot be just washed in the washing machine. It is a very delicate material and if you wish to clean a stain or something, you should wipe it using a cloth along with cold or lukewarm water.
Silk comforters can be used throughout the year. Since the material is so light, you can even use it in summer to stay cool. It can be used during the winter season, depending on its weight. For example, the silk comforters within a range of 400 gsm can be used to stay warm during the winter season.
2. GSM:
GSM means grams per square meter and it refers to the total amount of fiber that has been used while making the comforter. The more fiber a product uses, the higher the GSM is going to be.
The higher the GSM is the warmer and thicker the comforter is going to be.
The comforters are filled in using polyester, cotton, and other fibers like silk. Most of the comforters have polyester fiber filling that usually weighs around 80-400 gsm.
For the bed coverlet type of blankets like quilts or bedspread, the filling in is around 80-120 gsm. These comforters are good during the summer season. You can even use it as an extra layer during the winter season. However, you cannot rely completely on this kind of filling during the extreme winter season.
The most popular comforters have a filling in of around 220-280 gsm. You can use them during spring, fall, and also winter in the warm surrounding. These are the most commonly available options in the market.
If you are looking forward to buying a very warm comforter, you might want to consider buying one that has a filling over 300 gsm. Since it is not very popular in the market, you might have to take an extra blanket and combine them.
3. Size:
The best comforter is the one that is breathable and makes you feel cozy and of course, it should fit your bed perfectly. There is nothing more disappointing than buying a comforter that is either too small or too big for your bed.
The comforters are available in many sizes – Twin, Twin XL, King, Oversized King, Queen, Full Queen, and Oversized Queen.
Some users prefer buying oversized blankets to give a luxurious look to the interiors. But one fact that many are not aware of is when the oversized comforter is hanging over the sides, it has the ability to trap heat in a much better way. You can feel the warmth and comfort if you are sleeping over the edge. Couples who don’t find normal sized blankets comfortable can try this.
Here is a table showing the different mattress sizes along with the comforter requirements.
Mattress Size | Suitable Comforter Size |
---|---|
39”x75” (Twin) | 68”x86” |
39”x90” (Twin XL) | 68”x90” |
54”x75” (Double) | 78”x86” to 86”x86” |
60”x80” (Queen) | 90”x90” |
76”x80” (King) | 104”x92” |
72”x84” (Oversized King) | 110”x98” |
Note:
- The sizes of the mattresses vary from brand to brand and thus, check the size of your mattress properly before buying the comforter.
- Also, after buying the mattress, make sure you buy the cover in the same size.
4. Outer Fabric:
This is another important factor that you should check for before buying a comforter. Some of the most commonly used fabrics while making comforters are as follows:
Cotton: It is the most versatile and natural fabric that is exceptionally soft. The material is breathable and can be used during warmer seasons.
Silk: The silk fabric offers a soft feel to your skin. The breathability and the coolness offered by the fabric make it a perfect choice for the winter season. However, it is a bit difficult to maintain and wash these comforters. It is a bit expensive too.
Cotton-Polyester Blend: The combination of cotton and polyester fabrics is well known for the softness. It provides more breathability when compared to cotton. However, the softness that it offers is similar to that of silk. Hence, it is a perfect combination for any season.
Wool: The most common properties of the wool fabric are providing a soft and warm feeling to your body. But, comforters with wool fabric are very costly.
5. Thread Count
Once you have finalized the fabric type, you must check the quality of fabric that is measured in thread count.
Thread count means the number of threads used per square inch of the fabric. The higher the thread count is the finer and tightly woven the fabric is going to be.
Higher thread count also makes sure that the fabric is soft and the filling remains inside rather than spreading through the gaps between the threads. Did you ever notice a feather or other fabric poking out of the comforter? This happens because of the lesser thread count.
You should not buy a comforter that has over 800 or less than 200 thread count. But, if you are going to buy a duvet cover for the comforter, you can settle for lesser thread count rather than spending extra money on the ones with higher thread count.
Here, we have mentioned different thread counts and the difference between each type. You can choose one as per your convenience.
- 300-400 thread count: This amount of thread count is just sufficient enough to hold the filling within the comforter.
- 400-500 thread count: Here, the weaving is done a bit tighter to offer extra durability to the comforter.
- 500-800 thread count: This range is not much different than the 400-500 range except for the fact that instead of threads, it refers to two-ply yarns.
- 800+: Here, the thread count is measured by double-counting the two-ply yarns. In a few cases, it does not have much impact on the feel or the durability of the comforter.
6. Construction of Comforter:
The construction of the comforter means the extra stitching that is done in the interior to prevent the filling material from shifting or creating lumps or dead spaces. Different brands use different types of constructions. Some of the most common ones are as follows:
- Sewn-through Construction
The sewn-through comforters have sewing through both top and bottom layers creating different patterns like diamonds or curved rectangles. The filling does not shift at all in these types of comforters offering better performance than the baffle box comforters.
- Baffle Box Construction
A baffle box comforter is sewn with flexible boxes that create pockets inside the comforter. The filling present inside the comforter cannot shift out of the dedicated box. This ensures that the filling is spread evenly throughout the comforter. However, the filling might shift within the box.
- Quilt Stitching
Quilt stitching is quite similar to baffle box construction as this also features a similar check-board stitching. However, they don’t feature fabric baffles that prevent the filling from shifting. This type of switching is perfect for those who are not expecting too much warmth from the comforter. Also, they are cheaper than the baffle box construction.
7. Weight:
The weight of a comforter varies from brand to brand. The most common comforters weigh around 500 grams to 3 kgs. For everyday use, we would suggest you to buy lightweight comforters.
They are easy to use and maintain. Most of them can be washed at home itself. The best part about lightweight comforters is they can be used throughout the year.
8. Reversible Comforter:
Reversible comforters are quite flexible and either side can be used. They have two unique sides with different color schemes or patterns. You will find many options in double-sided comforters. This makes them a perfect choice for long term bedding.
With the help of a reversible comforter, you can change the interior of your bedroom frequently. Some comforters feature striped, geometric, or floral pattern on one side and the other side has a bright color. Some comforters even feature unique patterns on both sides.
You can buy one as per your choice. It is very helpful in case of staining. If there is a stain on one side of the comforter, you can simply switch to the other side.
How to store comforters and blankets?
During summer or humid season when you are not going to use the comforter, you should make sure that you store them properly to protect them from any type of damage like dust, dirt, bugs, etc.
Before you plan to store the comforters or blankets, make sure they are clean as well as properly dried. Any leftover moisture can promote the growth of mold.
The ideal way to store any type of bedding is to fold it neatly and keep it in a closet or a shelf. There should be sufficient airflow so that the comforters breathe. This will also help in getting rid of mold or unpleasant or musty smell.
If you don’t have a dedicated space to store the comforter, you can even keep them under the bed. Make sure you protect it from dust by keeping it in a storage bag.
It is suggested to use cotton bags to keep the comforter as these bags effectively protect it from dust and bugs. They allow the moisture to escape. Another alternative to cotton bags is a vacuum storage bag.
Never use a plastic trash bag to keep the comforter as it is not airtight. It also allows the moisture to enter which then gets trapped inside. This can cause mold or mildew to grow on the comforter.
What is Brushed Microfiber?
Brushed microfiber is a microfiber fabric that is brushed to create a soft texture. It is a result of a process performed over a regular microfiber that takes it to another level in terms of aesthetics and functionality.
Brushing is a finishing process that helps in raising the surface fibers of the fabric. Here, the fabric goes through a process of fine mechanical brushing. Metal brushes are used to rub the fabric to generate fine fibers.

It is indeed a very comprehensive and hence useful write up. However, considering the need for comforters for North Indian winters, I didn’t get any choices that would meet those requirements of 300+ GSM. No brand seems to mention the temperature range their product would be suitable for. I would be grateful for any guidance in this regard.
