Since pedestal fans are strong and portable, they are very much in demand. There is nothing that a ceiling fan can do and pedestal fans cannot. One thing that makes the pedestal fans different from any other type of fan is that you can move it from one place to another without any worries.
As they are so popular, many brands have come up with multiple features and design to compete with one another. To help you with this, here is everything that you must know about pedestal fans.
What are pedestal fans?
Pedestal fans, also called as standing fans are nothing but electric fans that are mounted over a long rod. These are modern fans that are very light in weight and can be carried from one place to another with ease.
The fans offer different spinning modes that help them oscillate the head in all directions so that it can provide a cool breeze across the room. Like other types of fans, these fans also come with a lot of features and options.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Pedestal Fan for Your Room
To help you buy a pedestal fan for your house, here are a few things that you must consider.
1. Blade Sweep
The blade sweep range of a pedestal fan defines the area of cooling that the fan can provide. It is basically the circular zone covered by the blades of the fan while it is rotating. The higher value represents its cooling impact in a room. On an average, a good pedestal fan offers a blade sweep range between 400mm to 450mm.
2. Motor Power
The efficiency and the performance of the pedestal fans depend entirely on the power of the motor that is used in the fan. You should look for a motor that is powerful as it helps in a better performance of the fan. But, at the same time, high power consumption also leads to the addition of extra units to the electricity bill of your house.
An ideal pedestal fan requires a motor with power ranging from 50W to 100W. You can check for the power of motor in the documents that you get with the fan. If it is not mentioned there, you can also look for the fan’s wattage that is labeled either at the back or the bottom of the fan.
3. Fan Speed
The fan speed is measured in RPM i.e. rotations per minute It determines how fast can the air move with the help of the fan. Most of the fans let it be a ceiling fan, table fan, or pedestal fan offer speed of 1300 RPM or more.
Pedestal fans come with both the options – fixed speed and variable speed. Thus, you can either control the speed of the fun or else run it at a constant speed. We suggest you buy a fan that offers a variable speed option.
These fans let you choose the speed according to your convenience. Most fans offer 3 speed options – low speed, medium speed, and high speed.
4. Air Delivery
Air delivery of the fan is measured in cubic meter per minute i.e. CMM. This refers to the volume of air that the fan can move in a minute. You should always go for a fan that offers higher CMM value.
5. Type of Motion
Pedestal fans offer different types of motion. They are as follows:
- Fixed Motion
The pedestal fans with fixed motion options operate in only one fixed direction. If you wish to change the direction of the fan, you will have to lift the fan completely and place it in the desired direction. The fan passes the air continuously in that particular direction.
- Rotating Motion
The pedestal fans with rotating motion functions in an exactly opposite way as that of fans with a fixed motion option. Unlike them, the pedestal fans with this type of motion rotate its motion with time in all directions evenly.
- Oscillating Motion
The fans with oscillating motion also aim to provide air in a particular direction but it functions in a different way. The fan first moves up to an angle of 90 degrees and then take a pause. It remains motionless there and the grill of the fan then starts spreading the air in the needed directions.
6. Height Adjustment
The pedestal fans allow you to adjust the height of the fan. It can be moved up and down depending upon the target area. The height of these fans also varies. Thus, do a little bit of research on the pedestal height that they offer and select something on the basis of your preference. Also, check if the rod provides decent movement while switching the height.
7. Tilting Head
Some pedestal fans come with tilted head. Such fans have one extra joint. It is totally up to you if you want to have this feature on the pedestal fan at your house as it is not that important.
By using this feature, you can tilt the head of the fan in an upward direction so that rather than blowing the air directly on you, it helps in deflecting the indoor air in the entire room. Thus, if you don’t like a direct blow of air on you, you can go ahead with the fans that offer tilting head as an option.
8. Material
Pedestal fans are made using different types of materials such as plastic, stainless steel, and other metals. Each type of fan has its own pros and cons.
For example, the fans that are made using plastic are economical and durable when compared to the ones that are made using stainless steel as they are more prone to corrosion and rust. But, to prevent them from any type of corrosion or rusting, the modern fans use stainless steel as a core material and have a power-coated guard along with a polymer ring.
These coatings make the steel rust-free, stronger and resistant against any type of damage. When compared to these materials, plastic fans are not that strong and are more prone to cracks.
Some of the other materials that are used to make pedestal fans are brass. They are also prone to corrosion but polished brass can solve this problem.
9. Blades
All the fans use either plastic, steel, or aluminum to make the blades. All the blades produce an almost similar amount of air with almost a similar intensity. What matters here is how many numbers of blades are there in the fan. Fans come with 3, 4 or 5 blades. The more the number of blades in a fan, the better airflow it will be able to generate.
10. Noise
You can have a little bit of control over the noise generated by fans. There are fans that produce noise levels that are less than 60 decibels. Most of the pedestal fans work efficiently without creating disturbing noise levels.
Another factor that plays a major role in the noise generation level is the surrounding atmosphere. If you are using the fan in your bedroom that is completely silent, you might feel that the fan is generating some sound whereas, if you are using the same fan in the living room or in the kitchen, you might not feel the same about it.
11. Fan Modes
Most of the pedestal fans offer rather one or two modes including natural or sleep mode. There are some fans that also offer Reduction mode. These modes help in stimulating gentle breeze across your room, especially when you are sleeping.
Reduction mode automatically reduces the speed of the fan after some time. You can set these timings by yourself. When the fan is in reduction mode, it switches the speed to the fan’s next lowest speed setting for half an hour. This feature is very helpful in your bedroom where you don’t want to sleep in a noisy atmosphere.
12. Remote Control
A remote control is always a beneficial thing that reduces the effort of getting up every time you want to change the settings. The pedestal fans that come along with a remote control make it very convenient to use. You can control on and off options using the remote control. You can even change the speed settings but one thing that you cannot control oscillation.
The only thing that you need to make sure of is maintaining a proper distance between the fan and the remote control so that it reacts to the settings immediately. Some remote control these days come with even advanced control settings.
13. Timer
Timer is a very good feature that a pedestal fan must have. If you don’t want the fan throughout the night but if you don’t want to get up to turn it off, you can select a timer. Once you select the timer, the fan turns off automatically
