Drinking fresh juice is the healthiest and nutritious way of starting a day. Compared to pre-packed juices, they have more nutrients and minerals.
Having a juicer at home lets you make juices anytime you want – without making your hands or kitchen platform messy.
Though purchasing juicer is not a major investment, it is still better to understand the specifications and your requirements.
Wondering how to choose a juicer? We have mentioned few factors below…
1. Type – Based on their juicing technology, juicers are categorized into three types.
- Centrifugal Juicers – Suitable for extracting juices from vegetables and juices. But not efficient in juicing leafy greens, wheat grass and herbs.
- Masticating or Cold Press Juicers – They are also known as slow juicers as they take more time to extract juice than centrifugal juicers. But they are also capable of juicing wheat grass, herbs, greens, fruits and vegetables.
- Twin Gear – As the name suggests, two gears are provided closely to each other. They rotate at low speed to extract juice from the food produce. Compared to above two types, they are slow but can retain more nutrients.
2. Speed Levels
Choosing a juicer model with multiple speeds can be beneficial. Slow speed levels are perfect for juicing soft food produce like fruits. High speed levels are suitable for hard food ingredients like vegetables, coconut and others.
3. Yield Amount
Juicers that take less time for juicing retain less yield amount. If you want maximum yield amount, you should go for masticating or twin gear juicer models. As they not only yield more amount but also retain maximum nutrients. Centrifugal juicers take less time for juicing so they extract less yield and less nutrients as well.
Price range of juicers is around Rs. 5000 to Rs. 20,000. However, if you want a juicer below Rs. 2000 for just single serving, then we recommend going for portable juice blenders.

How to Choose a Juicer for Home?
Juicers come in a wide price range which usually depends on features it has, juicing technology and other factors. It is not good to choose a product blindly based on a myth – only expensive products work better. It is always better to check all the factors before making a final decision. It is important to set up your own criteria and select one best model.
Type of Juicers
Based on their juicing functionality, juicers are divided into 3 different types – centrifugal, twin gear, and masticating juicers. We have mentioned these types in detail along with its benefits and drawbacks.
a) Centrifugal Juicers
These are the most popular and commonly available juicers in the market. They are pretty much fast and easy to operate than other types of juicers. Centrifugal juicers have wide feeding tube – so you don’t have to cut the produce in fine pieces before juicing, thus reducing the preparation time.
In centrifugal juicers, the fruits and vegetables are pushed through a chute to a fast spinning mesh that shred and spun the fruit or vegetable and filter the juice through the mesh into a container. But the high speed spinning of the juicers causes the juice to oxidize faster, therefore it is recommended to consume the juice right away to ensure maximum nutrients, color and flavor.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Simple to use and maintain | A bit noisy |
Doesn’t take much space | Not suitable for wheatgrass, herbs and green leafs. |
Wide feeding tube, thus less preparation work | Foam in the juice |
High speed, so less time for juicing | Less yield juice |
Available in affordable rates | Generates heat when operated at high speeds |
Most of them contain separate pulp collectors. |
b) Masticating juicers (Cold Press/Slow Juicer)
These juicers are also called as cold press or slow juicer. These are high end juicers that produce more healthful and nutrient rich juice. These juicers use a gear that chews up the fruit or vegetable to break down the fiber cell walls and extract the juice and squeeze it though a stainless steel screen. Masticating juicers run on slower speed which reduces oxidation of the juice and retains more nutrients. The juice from masticating juicers also last longer than the juice from centrifugal juicers.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Preserves more nutrients | A bit expensive |
Quieter operation | Small feeding tube, thus more preparation time |
Capability of processing frozen food as well | Takes more time for juicing than centrifugal juicer |
Yields more juice | |
Suitable for juicing wheatgrass, herbs, soft fruits and leafy greens | |
Easy to handle and clean | |
Some of these juicers come with multifunctional features | |
Doesn’t cause foam in the juice | |
Let’s the juice stay fresh for longer time |
c) Twin Gear Juicers (Triturating juicers)
These juicers are also known as triturating juicers. Twin gear juicers are even slower that masticating juicers that extract the highest yield of juice and retain maximum nutrients. These juicers grind and press the pulp between two rollers gears and squeeze out the juice slowly. This causes minimal oxidation and extends the freshness of the juice for up to 72 hours. These juicers are best suited for juicing leafy greens and wheat grass.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Extracts more juice from produce than other kinds of juicers, thus more yield | Take more space |
Can also be used to prepare sorbets, pasts, nut butter, and baby foods | Requires more prep work as you have to chop the produce in small pieces |
Comes with flexible options | More expensive |
No foam in the juice | Process of juicing takes a bit longer |
No noise is produced | Sometimes pulp can slip through |
Preserves maximum amount of nutrients | |
Makes most of leafy greens, herbs and wheatgrass |
Centrifugal Vs Masticating Vs Twin Gear Juicers
Type | Centrifugal | Masticating | Twin Gear |
---|---|---|---|
Nutrient Retention | Moderate | High | Very High |
Juice Shelf Life | 24 hours | 72 hours | 72 hours |

What to look for when buying a Juicer?
Investing in juicer is helping you in long term vitality, energy and health care. Juicers come in many price ranges but if your usage is more it is better to invest in little expensive models.
It is always better to check all the factors before making a final decision. It is important to set up your own criteria and select one best model.
Below are some important factors that you should consider before you buy the juicer:
1. Feeder Tube Size:
Choose a juicer with wide feeding tube that can accommodate a whole fruits and vegetables, If the tube is small it will take lot of time for you to dice them and fit the tube of juices. This helps in reducing the preparation time.
2. Multiple Speeds:
It is better to choose a model that comes with multiple speed settings. Slow speeds are suitable for juicing soft fruits. And higher speeds are beneficial for hard food produce like carrots, beetroot, coconut and others. Because more motor power is required to break down the fibers of hard produce.
3. Pulp Ejection:
Juicing of fruits and vegetables definitely gives you some leftover pulp and some amount of skin. Few juicers collect the pulp externally in a separate collector specifically sized for it, or collect in an internal basket. External pulp ejection system helps you to juice large quantities continuously instead of stopping your machine, opening it and emptying the basket.
4. Yield Amount:
Masticating juicers extract more yield because of its slow processing method. If you want to know whether maximum pulp is extracted or not, you can check the pulp. Drier the pulp is; better the outcome is – because maximum juice is extracted. If the pulp is wet and drippy, then it indicates the inefficiency of the juicer.
5. Juice container:
In order to avoid splashes while juicing, most of the juicers come with juice container – which is specifically designed to match the spout. If the juicer doesn’t come with a juice container, then the juicing process can be messy.
6. Cord length and storage:
More flexibility and portability can be achieved if the cord is up to four feet or more. Models with longer cords have a way to conceal cord when not in use. Juice extractors are available in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. Compact juicers are easy to store and don’t have much parts to clean, and are apt for the people who have limited kitchen space.
7. Noise:
It is better to avoid models that make loud noise. Blender juicers and centrifugal juicers are the noisiest ones as they run on higher rpm (ranging from 5000 to 15000). If you want to know whether the model you choose is noisy or not, then check the rpm. If the rpm is higher, then noise will be high as well. And vice versa.
8. Easy to use:
The usage of the juicer should be simple and easy. Juicers that have lesser parts and wider tube will make the preparation and cleaning easy. Compared to horizontal type juicers, compact juicers like centrifugal and vertical masticating are easy to use.
9. Easy to clean:
Buying a juicer that takes lot of time to clean will discourage you to use it each time, the juicer that takes lesser time to clean keeps you motivated to use the device regularly.
Twin gear juicers and horizontal cold press juicers are time consuming as they have several parts depending on each model. Centrifugal juicer comes with few parts to clean, cleaning the cutting disk and mesh screen is a task.
Vertical masticating juicers can be cleaned easily as they don’t have lot of parts and mostly are dishwasher safe.
Considering if the juicer is dishwasher safe or no will save lot of energy and time.
10. Beginner or Veteran?
Compared to a regular user, beginner will give priority to different things like reasonably priced, speedy function or easy to assemble. Advanced user will go for the details and long-standing effect of their purchase.
11. Brand:
Some juicer brands provide good customer service. But you have to be careful with other brands. Before purchasing the product, make sure to check out their customer reviews for service and their response to any queries or repairs. And also make sure they fulfill their warranty claims.
12. Price:
Price of the juicer depends on the machine type, brand and extra features machine have. Compared to masticating models the centrifugal juicer types are cheaper ones. Before buying the product compare the prices of different models and brands.
Always try to invest in premium quality juicer than less quality juicers. Because less quality juicers may not give you same quality in the long run. So, it is better to invest initially in a high quality juicer as they will last long.
13. Warranty:
Make sure to check out and verify what all are included and what all are not included as some manufacturers are vague to the warranty they give. Centrifugal juicers offer 1 year warranty and both masticating and twin gear juicers offers 15 years warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions?
The market is filled with several brands and models. However, the top 10 best juicer brands are Kuvings, Philips, Bajaj, Panasonic, Morphy Richards, Prestige, Sujata, Maple and Usha.
The answer for this question depends on your requirements. If you want a juicer that is quick, easy to clean, needs less preparation work, then centrifugal is the best choice. If you like juicing wheatgrass, herbs or green leafs a lot, then masticating juicer is the right one. However, if you are health geek, have a lot of time for juicing and want to preserve all the nutrients of the product while juicing then twin gear juicer is the right choice.
Typically, most of the brands provide warranty of motor and attachments as well. The time period of warranty will be different between these two things. For example, prestige provides 3-year warranty on the motor. However, only 1-year warranty is provided for the accessories.
The average life expectancy of juicer is 5 years and may vary depending on the usage, quality and the functionality. If you use the juicer harshly, then the lifespan is reduced to 2 or 3 years.
If you purchase a juicer either online or in the stores, you will get some attachments that include pusher, juicer collector, pulp collector, foam separator, spinning plates, auger, hopper, strainer, mesh filter, cleaning brush and others.
It depends on how regularly you use the juicer. Well, right after juicing, you will wash the jars immediately. However, once in a while you have to take some time to clean the outside and other parts to prevent it from rusting. Once in a month should be fine enough for this.
Most of the people think that juicer and blender are the same – but it’s not true. Both these appliances turn fruits, veggies or any other food produce in liquid but the end results is not the same. Juicer separates fiber from rest of fruits and vegetables. Juice will be collected in one place and pulp will be discarded into another container. This process retains more nutrients and extracted juice is easy to digest. In a blender, whole fruit or vegetable is blended into juice. This provides thicker juicer which is usually called as smoothie. As the juice is thicker, it takes time to digest. Though it has all the nutrients, they are slowly released.
According to our research, Preethi Zodiac MG218 750-Watt mixer grinder is the best choice. The performance of its juicer is top-notch. It comes with multiple speed settings which enables you to juice different kinds of food produce. Apart from that, it also several other amazing features. For more information, read our article HERE.
When it comes to wheatgrass, it is better to go for masticating juicers or twin gear juicers. Centrifugal juicers are not suitable as they cannot break the wheat grass structure and extract juice from it. Masticating or twin gear juicers work slowly in breaking down the fiber cell walls and squeeze the juice from it.
For masticating juicer, we recommend Kuvings Professional B1700 or Panasonic MJ-L500 cold press juicer. For more information and details on specifications, you can read the product description mentioned above in the article.
If time is not a constraint, then you can go for masticating or twin gear juicers. However, if you want to make juice is less amount of time, then go for centrifugal juicers. For best models for both juicer types, check out the list of best juicers in India mentioned above.
It is better to avoid using centrifugal or masticating juicers for juicing citrus fruits like lemons and oranges. Because sometimes, the seeds can also get juice and the extract will not be tasty. We recommend to purchase citrus juicer for this. Prestige Electric Citrus juicer is the best option.
Few Words Before Wrapping Up…
Juicing is an excellent way of getting all the nutrients, minerals and essential enzymes from the food produce. And moreover you can even combine vegetables, fruits and green leafs to make healthy and delicious smoothies and juices.
For making juicing a simple and mess-free process, it is better to invest in a good juicer. As there are several choices available in the market, it can be quite confusing to settle down for one choice. This is the reason we have gathered all the information necessary to consider while purchasing a good juicer. We are sure, our buying guide will be of a great help to make a choice.

I just unboxed my new Philips Juicer and juiced apples. I am 100% satisfied with its performance. But only thing to point out here is the bad odor from it (appliance) after the first use.
First of all congrats vasudev, for choosing the best brand. Be it any juicer, it is quite natural to produce some unusual odor at the beginning. After using it for some time, it will be absolutely normal.
That is why it is always important to clean the appliance thoroughly before the first use. No regrets! There are excellent ways to get rid of such foul smells anytime.
Rub a lemon peel inside the juicer.
The mixture of vinegar and baking soda will also be of great help.
