Buying Guide: What to look for in an Egg Boiler before buying?

Egg boilers work on a simple principle of induction. As the principle is simple, there are a ton of companies that come about making cheap egg boilers. In order to steer out of trouble, you have to look at the following pointers before you decide to pick an egg boiler.

1. Types of Egg Boilers/Cookers/Steamers

If you have come here after reading the article, by now you must have understood that not every egg boiler is the same. They come in different types and shapes. The placement of these steamers/cookers also defines the type of the cooker.

A few are simply used to boil/steam eggs. While a few others are used for poaching eggs or even frying eggs. There are even electric cookers which can be used for making entirely different egg recipes.

You have to understand your requirements and how these cookers will help you before picking one.

  • Countertop Egg Boiler

Most of the cookers mentioned above belong to this category. These type of cookers are elegant, stylish and come with good technology. They are mostly used for boiling and for poaching eggs too.

The operational procedure for this type of cooker is simple. It is plug and play via a single switch. They come with inbuilt timers and a few even with an alarm that buzzes after the timer stops indicating the end of boiling.

Nowadays, a few advanced forms of these cookers come with toggling options. Here, you can adjust the level of how you egg should be cooked. Soft, Hard or medium boiled. They even have a delay timer to slowly cook eggs and add more relish to them.

  • Microwave egg boilers

These are non electric and work only if you have a microwave. The operational procedure is simple and needs you to place the eggs just like a countertop egg boiler. Instead of pugging in a switch, you will be placing it inside a microwave and then time it.

Microwave based egg cookers are easy to arrange and are pretty easy to clean too. But the problem with these are that they can be used for one thing. They do not come with multi functionalities like the countertop models.

2. Cooking Options

You cannot expect to be eating a simple boiled egg for every time. You want taste and it has to be one of the desirable trait of an egg boiler.

Look for a boiler which offers you more than a simple egg boiling solution. It should be able to help you poach eggs, make an omelette. They should give you one of the hard, soft and medium boiling choices.

A few egg cookers can even be used to steam a few small chopped up vegetables. While a few others can even heat up an english muffin to be topped with a poached egg. Eggs Benedict. Nutritious, healthy and heavenly breakfasts.

3. Capacity of the number of eggs that are possible in a single go

A typical egg boiler can boil around 7 eggs in a single go. But this differs from cooker to cooker. A few have only 5 capacity egg tray while a few cookers come with 14 egg tray capacity too.

Bigger isn’t necessarily be better. Bigger sometimes may consume more power for smaller number of egg boiling requirements. Understand how many eggs would you be needing on a daily basis.

If you are a bachelor, it is better to go with smaller number tray version. Bigger is just a waste of space, energy and cost for you.

If you are a family, go for a bigger egg tray version. Smaller makes no sense.

4. Size of the egg cooker

The correlation for this is same as the capacity too. Bigger doesn’t mean better. These are daily appliances which need to be within your reach yet not too big that they consume a lot of living space.

If you are a bachelor or a family which lives in a small space, look for something that is small and compact. Ideally 5 or 7 tray capacity or even a double decker if the capacity should be higher and the space, smaller.

If you are a family with bigger living area in kitchen, they maybe go for bigger versions. Something that adds a great look for your kitchen interiors.

5. Build material of the egg cooker

This one’s a deal breaker. Egg boilers usually come either with plastic, aluminium or stainless steel bodies.

Plastic or fibre cookers are non expensive affairs. Plastic lids are ideal for their transparent nature. You can see the eggs get boiled through the lids. They even do not get heater up quickly. But make sure that the plastic used for the cooker is not made up of harmful chemicals such as BPA. If they come in contact with the eggs that you consume or the food you eat, there may be a bit serious consequence.

Stainless steel or aluminium bodies are more durable and give a classy look to the cooker. But steel lids have the tendency to get hot quick. You may accidentally burn your fingers. Keep it away from children and handle with care.

6. Automatic Off, alarm and timer features

Most of the countertop egg boilers, like the ones mentioned here, come with an automatic off feature. Alarm or an automatic induction based switch off has become the signature feature of an egg boiler.

Automatic turn off cooker does not necessarily come with manual timers. They usually have a timer pre installed in them.

A few models of cookers alert you with an alarm indicating that the timer is done and you need to switch it off. A few automatically turn off after the pre designated timer.

Recent models of electric cookers come with a visual screen where you can see the timers. They are not single touch models and come with a range of settings and options to pick from.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much Does An Egg Cooker Cost?

Ans: A basic electric cooker starts from about 299 rupees and can go up to 10,000 or 15,000 rupees for premium quality models. But high price doesn’t necessarily mean high performance.

If you are a bachelor or a student who lives alone, it is better to invest in nominal priced product with good user reviews.

2. How does an electric egg boiler work?

Ans: Egg Cookers take few water to boil eggs. The logic behind this is almost similar to any pressure cooker. It lies in the fact that when you place eggs in the cooker along with water, the water heats and becomes steam. The steam does not escape from the cooker and is swirls around in the container cooking up the eggs with the steam.

3. How much time does it take for the egg boiler to boil eggs.

Ans: A typical cook time for an egg boiler is about  7 minutes. But it differs from model to model. A few may cook it UNDER 5 minutes while a few take up to 10 or even 15 minutes to cook all the eggs.

Safety Precautions and Tips to use an Electric Egg Cooker effectively

Electric cookers are simple yet can be dangerous if used wrong. Here are a few tips to use it correctly and safely for a nutritious meal.

  1. Stay clear and a bit far from the steam outlet of an egg cooker. A sudden burst of steam to your face or even hands can be dangerous.
  2. Make sure you turn off the power valve after the eggs are done. This is to prevent reheating or reboiling of the eggs again. As the container gets cooled.
  3. Clean the cooker after each use and dry the trays thoroughly.
  4. Keep the electrical wire and the induction plate un exposed to any water contamination.
  5. Read the instruction manual carefully once if you are a first time user of such products.

    • Hi Surya,
Steels lids are much durable and stronger than plastic lids. And moreover steel lids look more luxurious and pleasing compared to plastic. Plastic lid egg boilers may be less expensive but they last only few months to one year. Whereas steel lids last at least 3 – 5 years.
