There is a myth that the microwave oven uses RF radiations to heat the food which results in forming cancer cells. It’s totally wrong. It just boils the water molecules to produce heat and does not use x-rays or gamma rays to make the food radioactive.

11. Can we use metal cookware in a convection microwave oven?

Usually, metal cookware is not recommended in the microwave. Because the microwaves cannot penetrate into the metal properly, leaving the food uncooked. Apart from that, metal can also lead to arcing the oven. However, metal and foil can be used safely during a convection microwave.

12. What type of cookware can I use in a microwave?

Ceramic glass, wax paper, and glass are acceptable to use in the microwave. However other materials like aluminum foil, steel, aluminum, melamine, plastic, and others can be used only if the manufacturer specifically mentioned them as microwave safe.

13. Does microwave oven emit harmful radiation that can lead to cancer?

A microwave is actually a non-ionizing appliance which means that – it doesn’t change the chemical or physical properties of food while heating it. Microwaves when exposed, get completely absorbed into the food. Actually, the heat generated is caused due to the friction between food molecules and microwaves. As the microwaves are completely converted into heat, nothing is left behind to cause any harm.

14. Can microwaves leak radiation?

Normally, microwaves don’t leak any radiation. If there is any fault in the door seals, then there is a change of radiation leak. Reasons for door seal faults include mechanical abuse, collection of dirt, simple wear and tear.

15. Do microwaves interfere with the functioning of other electronic appliances?

No, they not interfere. The BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) has set the microwave oven frequency at 2450 Mhz which don’t interfere with radio, FM, and TV as they have different frequencies.

16. Does eating microwave food for a longer time have any effect on humans?

Cooking food in a microwave oven does not alter it physically or chemically. It just heats the food ingredients to cook them. There are no known effects of eating microwaved food on humans.

17. Can I use a built-in microwave oven as a tabletop model?

No, you shouldn’t. built-in microwave model has should be fixed into a microwave oven as the sides are exposed without paneling. The exposed sides will get very hot while in operation and the heat emitted from it can be harmful. The same applied to the tabletop, as it should not be fixed into a cabinet.

18. My microwave oven is on but the food is not getting heated/cooked, what can be the reason?

This can be caused due to some reasons that include…
Timer function may not be used inadvertently
The door may not be closed firmly
If these two are not the reasons, then call the service operator and get it checked for any faults.

19. What does a microwave error, fault or function code represent?

Fault codes are programmed into the microwave oven. They help the technicians to understand and quickly diagnose the error with the oven. If the appliance is displaying any code, a trained service technician should be called to correct the issue.

20. The paint inside the microwave is chipping? What should I do?

Minor chipping or cracks in the paint will not affect the performance of the product. However, if the cavity coating is actively flaking or paint is peeling inside the oven cavity then discontinue the usage of the microwave and replace it with a new one.

21. How often should I replace my microwave oven?

Keeping the microwave oven on the refrigerator will not cause any harm. However, make sure the appliance is not leaking any microwaves. It is better to get it checked by an authorized technician. Another problem if the appliance is kept on the fridge – taking out hot food from the microwave can be a problem, especially for shorter people.

22. Why is it important to be careful while heating water/fluids in the microwave oven?

There have been many issues and reports of harmful injuries to people using a microwave oven for heating drinks/water. This issue especially occurs if you don’t know proper temperature and time. If the water is kept for heating at high temperature and for a long period of time, then it gets super-heated. Such super-heated water can explode even at slight disturbance leading to burns and serious injuries. So, it is very important to understand the time and temperature settings or else avoid heating liquids in the microwave oven.

  1. Hey there! Great article but I have a small question and hope you have an answer for me. Yesterday night, I decided to make a hard boiled eggs for myself in my LG microwave oven. I set the timer for about 15 minutes just to be sure. The egg straight up exploded inside the microwave oven just after 45 seconds or so. The oven is a bit mess and I’m not sure what went wrong here. Should I be really cooking eggs in a microwave oven? If so how? I’m looking for any solutions that might help me

    • Hi, Eggs along with their shell when boiled in a microwave have a greater chance of exploding. This is so because the shells will aggravate to the heat and break faster. This may result in a lot of spillage around the oven and chances for the shell to damage the oven. Hence to prevent any such future explosions, try any of the following methods after cleaning up the oven.
For cleaning the oven, allow the oven to cool before you clean it. Use a cloth to wipe out the spoilage. In case of the oven not working from next usage, try contacting the customer support of the microwave company. If you are within your service .

      Soft Boiling:
Try pouring an egg directly into a small cup and then microwave it for about 4 minutes or so in half power.

      Hard Boiling:
If you wish for a hard boiled egg, then place the in enough water into a bowl to submerge the eggs but not to overfill the bowl. Also, add half a tablespoon of salt into the bowl of water for easier peeling and for the eggs not to crack and explode. Make sure that the microwave is at 50% of power.

Now try heating the egg in 15-20 second increments at low powers. Once you have got a soft boiled egg, remove the shell to finish the boiling.

  2. I’ve been using the microwave for last 2 years now. At times why does my microwave oven light get dim? Is it a major problem?

    Reply
    • Hi Abhilasha, check your power supply. Sometimes, when there is a low voltage supply, the lights will appear dim.
Apart from this, if you set the power settings less than the normal, this will cause the light to be dim.
This is absolutely normal and does not cause any harm to the appliance. But if you are still concerned about it, then get the light replaced.

  3. hi, i recently tried to make popcorn in my microwave oven. but the corn is not popping in it. Is there any fault with the appliance.

    Reply
    • Hi! If all the food other than popcorn are being heated well in your microwave, then there is no fault with the appliance. There may be some other reasons for this.

    • Due to low wattage of power. Generally it should be of 500 watts or even more than that.
    • The vessel used for heating of popcorn is not proper.
    • The raw popcorn grains being used by you may be old which generally will have low moisture any will not pop.
    • The popcorn which is frozen. Let it outside for some time before putting them in the microwave.
    • Improper placing of the bag over the tray.
    • If your microwave oven has a rack, you should keep it aside before heating the popcorn.
    • Rectify these issues and it will definitely work.

    • The food inside will be perfectly cooked. But still it is not a good idea to use the oven when the doors are open as this may result in causing unexpected accidents.

Remember that the microwaves radiate energy when doors are kept open while operating. These are dangerous and will have its own effect on the sensitive organs of our body especially eyes. In addition to this, these waves will pass through the entire house heating up the walls in the surrounding area and even causing disturbance to the wi-fi connection. Sometimes the fluorescent light bulbs which are in its (microwave oven) vicinity, will start illuminating too.Though this may be in the rare case when the microwaves are running on its full power, but still being on the safe side is very important.

You may get a doubt here as “if these waves are so harmful, then what effect will it have on the food being cooked inside?”

Let me explain. Microwaves just allow the water molecules present in the food to vibrate and the energy gets converted to heat which cooks food. This absolutely does not allow food to absorb any radiation.

      Hope this information helps!

  4. Hey! That was a wonderful article. I had recently purchased the LG 30L convection microwave oven. A doubt arises as to whether metal coated utensils are suitable to be used in it?

    Reply
    • Hi Madhav! Metals are not preferable to be used in microwave ovens as they can damage it over time. Basically, metals are high conductors of heat. On striking the oven surface, issues like developing holes in the microwave oven wall, damage in electric components etc will occur. Though there may not be any high risk of accidents, it is still good to remain on the safe side.

Rather than metal, microwave safe utensils made from materials like Pyrex, ceramic, glassware materials are ideal. I would also like to suggest the best brands of microwave safe utensils depending on the material you are opting to use.
      Tupperware crystal wave Generation 2
      Treo
      Yera Glassware
      Sivica Porcelain

  5. Hi I’ve been using my LG conventional microwave for more than 3 years now. Nowadays I observe my microwave oven getting switched off on its own and it’s really frustrating…

    Reply
    • Hi there! Let me state the probable reasons for this.

      • The loose door switch. This will probably happen due to the repeated usage.
      • Sometimes due to the breakage in the seal or the basket.
      • Overheating may also be one of the cause for this.

You should approach a service center and get it repaired.

    • IFB and Samsung are the best brands in the Market and premium quality products. These are the best suitable for Large Families.

      1. IFB 30 L Convection Microwave Oven (30BRC2, Black)
It comes with 30Litre Capacity and 1 year on product and 3 years on Magnetron and Cavity and 101 Auto cook Menu.

      2. Samsung 28-Litre Convection Microwave Oven
It comes with 28Litre Capacity and 1 year on product and 5 years on Magnetron.

Both are best in Service. If you want more Warranty go for Samsung. Want More Capacity then go for IFB.

    • Hey,

The IFB 25 L Convection Microwave Oven 25BCSDD1 is a 25-litre capacity oven which has almost all the same functional capabilities of the other IFB convection ovens.
It is a convection oven with a strong metallic body, a touch keypad, child lock and one year warranty and 3 years warranty on magnetron and cavity.

Unlike the 30BRC2 and the 20SC2, it does not have auto-cook menu options nor a starter kit. While it has 900 watts of power consumption, this slows down your cooking time compared to the other IFB variants. These and its price factor is the reason why we picked the 30BR2 and 20SC2 models instead of the 25BCSDD1 for our list.

    • Hi,
In order to detect the leakage in a microwave, you need to have either a neon bulb or a fluorescent bulb. First take a microwave glass and fill it with water. Now open the microwave and place it at the centre of the microwave. Now close the door and dim the lights in the room. (For better results, make the room dark)

Now turn on the microwave and place the bulb as near to the microwave as possible. With the microwave running, move the bulb about the microwave’s front, back and sides. If the bulb glows at any point of time (even for a small glow), that particular area has a leakage in microwaves.
