“9 Simple Tips on How to Maintain Water Purifier at its Maximum Efficiency”

No matter how expensive, branded or well-efficient your water purifier is – improper care and maintenance can diminish its purification quality. And moreover this can also reduce the life of a water purifier.

Proper cleaning and maintenance is crucial if you want a water purifier to last long and work efficiently throughout its life. Well, not many of us are aware of the right cleaning process of an RO system.

For cleaning a water purifier, you have to be aware of when, how and what is required for it.

Unaware of this knowledge…?

Don’t worry! In this article I have provided all the information required to maintain an RO purifier at its most efficient state.

Water Purifier Maintenance Tips

Below are some of the useful tips to help you maintain the water purifier at maximum efficiency and trouble-free for several years.

1. Read & Follow the Guidelines Given In User Manual

The first and foremost step in maintaining your RO system for effective and long-lasting operation is to read and follow the guidelines given in the user manual. This is something that most users tend to neglect.

While all RO purifiers come with a user manual, most reputed brands give a detailed manual that provides complete information. This includes instructions for installation, how the purifier works, the parts included in it, dos and don’ts, and maintenance tips.

This manual will be of great help in maintaining and keeping your water purifier in perfect condition. It can be your purifier’s savior. And the best part is that you can resolve many common issues by referring to the manual. This will help cut down unnecessary visits of your RO technicians. So, do not throw away your user manual but keep it safe.

2. Change RO Filters Regularly

Water filters are one of the main components of your purifier. They purify the water by absorbing any contaminants in it. When you do not change the filters periodically, the contaminants can clog the filters, affecting their functionality. This will further affect the quality of water.

To ensure smooth functioning, replace the filters and membrane regularly. If you notice reduced water flow or a bad odor, then these are clear indications that you should change the filters at the earliest.

RO purifiers usually have several filter stages for the replacement schedule. You can check the user manual for the information provided regarding the filters used and when to replace them.

Some advanced purifiers available in the market are now coming with automatic filter change alerts. This technology alerts the users in advance for the replacement of filters.

The standard replacement schedule is as below:

  • Pre-Filter Cartridge: 6-9 months*
  • Sediment Filter: 12 months*
  • Carbon Filter: 12 months*
  • RO Membrane: 2-3 years*

Note: The standard replacement schedule varies for different brands and models. Please refer to the user manual for the exact schedule or timely replacement.

Depending on the quality of the input water (high impurities, high TDS level), you might have to replace the filters and RO membrane earlier than the given timeframes.

3. Change the UV Lamp at Regular Intervals

To maintain your purifier, replace the UV lamp on schedule. Most UV lamps can solarize up to 9,000 hours (12 months) before losing their effectiveness. Some renowned brands provide a UV fail alarm in the water purifier. This alerts the user to change/replace the lamp whenever it is time.

4. Don’t Neglect Drips and Leakages

Are you noticing water leakage in your purifier? If yes, do not neglect it and ignore it. Contact a water purifier expert immediately and let them know about the leakage issue. Also, schedule a maintenance check-up to get it fixed at the earliest.

5. Cleaning and Sanitization

One of the best ways to maintain your RO purifier is by getting it cleaned properly. This is often the underlooked step by many. Get a professional to clean all the internal pipes of the RO system and the storage tank at least once a year. You can get them cleaned while replacing the filters.

When you store the water for too long there are chances of microbial contamination of water. Foul smell and taste are the indications to say that water has microbial contamination. Empty the storage tank regularly and fill it with fresh water to avoid the same. Whenever you are going out of your house for a while, turn off the purifier and empty the tank.

Note: A typical RO system requires a thorough cleaning of the tank once a year.

6. Instal a Softener for Better Functioning of the Water Purifier

Installing a softener is yet another way for the extra efficient functioning of the RO system. Though many people wonder if it is a good idea or not truth is that a softener and ROS make a very good combination. The reason being that the RO system alone cannot tackle the presence of hard chemicals like magnesium and calcium in the water. When you use a softener with the purifier, it not only increases the longevity of the purifier but also facilitates very clean water with a good taste. However, the installation of a softener can be tricky when done by yourself. It is advisable to get the task done by a professional.

7. Keep the Exteriors of the Water Purifier Clean

If you want your RO system to last more, for about 12-15 years, keep the exteriors clean. It is as important as cleaning and sanitizing it internally. The other benefit is that it will make your purifier look like a brand new one.

If you are not sure how to do it, I will tell you how. Use foamy water to clean the outside of the purifier, including external water dispensing. Not keeping the tap and the area around it clean, may contaminate the water while getting dispensed.

Make sure you clean the exteriors of the purifier, especially the area around the tap frequently.

8. Get the RO System Serviced Regularly by a Good Technician

This is yet another crucial step to ensure the effective and trouble-free functioning of your purifier. Get your RO system serviced by a trained professional after every six months. You can utilize the services of an authorized technician from your RO service provider or any well-trusted organization.

Regular servicing is a necessary step as it will help in maintaining the purity of water. It will eliminate the chance of any serious problem with your water purifier.

During servicing, you may have to replace few parts of it. Do not hesitate to do it and always opt for high-quality filters and other genuine parts. Ensure timely replacement of those and do not risk your health by choosing cheap and unreliable filters.

Note: After servicing, do not forget to drain the first tank of water if you had a filter change or cleaning.

Never drink water stored in the tank for more than 48 hours. In such a case, drain the tank completely and refill it with fresh drinking water.

9. Annual Maintenance Cost

The warranty period for almost all the RO water purifiers is a minimum of 1 year. During this period, you don’t have to pay anything to your service technician, even though you had your filters changed. Because it all comes under the AMC contract of your purifier. However, after the warranty period, the average costs of AMC would be around Rs 3000 to Rs 6000, including the replacement of worn parts.
