Most of the LED TVs provide panel specifications as A+ Grade Panel and IPS Panel. Not many of us aware the difference between these two and which one to choose.
A+ grade is a screen panel rating that guarantees highest panel quality. This means that A+ grade panels will have least imperfections like defects or scratches. And they will be transparent as well.
When it comes to panel types, LED TVs come with either IPS or VA. Both these panel types come with A+ grading. For more information on A+ grade rating and IP, VA panel types, check our Buying Guide.
Below are few important factors to consider while purchasing A+ Grade Panel LED TV
1. Screen Size
LED TVs are available in several screen size options. Based on the viewing distance, you have to choose the screen size. Below are some the standard guidelines…
Screen Size | Suitable Viewing Distance |
---|---|
32 inches | 4.5 feet |
40 inches | 5.6 feet |
43 inches | 6 feet |
49 inches | 7 feet |
50 inches | 7 feet |
55 inches | 7.7 feet |
65 inches | 9 feet |
2. Resolution
Flat panel screens come in three resolutions options: 4K or Ultra HD – 3840 x 2160, Full HD – 1920 x 1080, HD Ready – 1280 x 720. HD ready and Full HD resolutions are best suitable for watching TV using DTH services. But for online streaming services services ike Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, we recommend to choose 4K or UHD resolution.
Note: However, make sure the internet speed is at least 25Mbps for watching 4K content uninterruptedly.
3. Smart TV
With smart TV option, you can stream online services like Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Netflix, Youtube and others. This provides much better watching experience than over the laptops or mobiles. Smart TVs with Android operating system are a better option as they come with Google Voice assistant which makes it easy to install several apps from Google Play Store.

What is A+ Grade Panel?
Every TV and screen panel undergoes strict quality checks before releasing into the market. The panel is usually checked for marks, scratches, damages, spots and leakages. Based on these checks, they are graded as A+, A, B or C.
This is why, it is better to choose a panel that is almost transparent as it will provide better colour contrast. And A+ represents that panel is achromatic which means that they are very close to transparent.
Grade A+ usually indicates best quality and transparency of the panel. Be it for a laptop or TV, transparent panels are the best option. However, making complete transparent panels is a very difficult process. Even after a thorough process, panels have blackish tinge or shine leftover – which is very difficult to remove completely.
Achromatic zero panels are very difficult to produce and only few of them are capable of passing the test. These panels ensure the buyers get the best option for what they invest.
IPS or VA Panel?
Before making a purchase, you should understand the difference between VA and IPS panel so that you choose the right panel for your requirements. LCD panels with backlit come in two different panel options that include: Vertical Alignment (VA) and In-Plane Switching (IPS). Though, they both as LCD types, there are several difference in terms of performance.
If you want to watch TV while sitting at angle or have wide living room, then you should purchase a model with IPS panel type. If you want to experience good image quality in a dark room and no need of any wider angle viewing coverage, then VA panels are the right choice.
1. Picture Quality & Contrast Ratio
Compared to IPS panel, VA panel have much deeper blacks. IPS panels usually have grey colours shades. Blacks in TV are very important because – more blacks in screen panel means better picture quality as colours will highlight more in the dark background.
In showrooms where the area will be fully illuminated and bright, you may not realize the picture quality and contrast. But when you watch the TV (with IPS panel) in bedroom, you can see the clear difference as the lights will be dull compared to showrooms.
Contrast ration also plays an important role in providing better picture quality. VA panels have high contrast ration than IPS panel. This is the reason VA panel provides better contrast compared to IPS panel.
As both contrast and black levels are better in VA panel, obviously picture quality of them is much better than IPS panel.
2. Viewing Angle
This factor represents the angle at which you can watch the TV without any decrease in picture quality like blur and colour bleed. Some LCD types have much better viewing angle than others.
Compared to their counter type, IPS TVs are the best option. This is the main benefit of LEDs over LCD TVs. Most of the VA panels come with sizable degradation by 20 degrees to side. This is actually a dramatic saturation loss. IPS TVs lose the luminosity as they go around 36 degrees before 50% of brightness. Some of these models can even go over 50 degrees.
How Should You Choose A+ Grade Panel LED TV?
There are several factors to consider while purchasing an A+ Grade LED TV. We have explained them clearly in the buying guide. Read this information thoroughly as it helps you choose the right model that suits your requirements.
1. Screen Size
No matter which TV you are purchasing, the first factor to consider is the screen size. You have to choose it based on the number of people that watch TV together at one time, how close you sit to watch the TV and where you want to install it in the house. With this information, you have to choose a screen size that fits into your budget.
Below, we have mentioned TV size and its appropriate viewing distance.
Screen Size | Suitable Viewing Distance |
---|---|
32 inches | 4.5 feet |
40 inches | 5.6 feet |
43 inches | 6 feet |
49 inches | 7 feet |
50 inches | 7 feet |
55 inches | 7.7 feet |
65 inches | 9 feet |
2. Resolution
It represents the number of pixels that comprise the screen of a TV. Higher number of pixels means you will get sharper picture, clear colours and fine details. So, obviously the resolution has to better.
Usually, flat TV models come in three different resolution variants…
- 4K or Ultra HD – 3840 x 2160
- Full HD – 1920 x 1080
- HD Ready – 1280 x 720
Presently, DTH services present in India are providing Full HD and HD content. So, if you have DTH connection, thenHD Ready or Full HD resolution is the right choice.
However, if you stream online for Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar, then Full HD (1920 x 1080) or 4K or Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) are the right choice. However, if you chose 4K or Ultra HD, then make sure you have internet connection with 25 Mbps speed and capable of streaming 4K quality content.
If you are placing the TV in a tiny room or bedroom, then choose HD ready resolution. If you want to place the TV in a medium or large room, then you have to go for either Full HD or Ultra HD TV models. Because they provide best video quality and sharp images.
3. HDR (High Dynamic Range Technology)
This technology provides the TV a wide range of colours to display. TVs with this technology can provide better colour shades and vibrant picture that is close to what a human eye can naturally perceive. 4K Ultra HD TV provides more pixels to the TV screen and HDR technology will improves these pixels to provide much clearer picture. There are several HDR formats and popular ones among them are HDR10 and Dolby Vision. All the HDR compatible TVs can support HDR10 technology.
4. Smart TV
It represents the TV has the capability to connect with internet and comes with its own operating system. Some latest TVs come with computer-like features like video streaming and internet browsing as well. Though most of the TVs are branded as Smart, not all them are capable of offering these requisite features.
For instance, some smart TVs can support online content streaming through Youtube. However, they may not support downloading apps of your choice. In the same way, some smart TVs can be voice-enabled which allows you to browse content using voice commands while others may not have this feature. So, you have to choose the best smart TV based on the usage and focus on the best facilities you can get within your budget.
5. Operating System
TV manufacturers use different operating systems which have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you want any particular feature in the TV, then you have to check which operating system it offers. Some apps and content are unique and can be accessed only in certain smart platforms.
Samsung and LG has designed their own operating systems like Tizen Os and WebOs. Other brands use Google’s Android version. Some newly emerged brands use Android as the base and change it a bit and market as their own.
Note: For better viewing experience, we recommend choose a smart TV that has enough internet speed and it has to be installed close the router. Or else, you can experience buffering issues and poor connection. For streaming 4K ultra HD content, make sure you have at least 25mbps speed connection. Consult your internet provider to upgrade the internet service or router accordingly.
6. Refresh Rate
This factor represents how many times it refreshes the image on the screen. For better viewing experience, higher refresh rate is recommended. To say in simple terms, if the TV has high refresh rate, then there will be less motion blur.
For example, if the refresh rate is mentioned as 60Hz, then the frame over the screen will refresh 60 times per second. Refresh rates of smarts TVs in India range from 60Hz to 120Hz.
Typically, movies are shot at 24 frames per second (FPS) and live shows usually shot at 30FPS or 60FPS. So, if the refresh rate of the TV is higher, then it will create a smooth image flow. For just regular home entertainment, 60Hz is suitable. However, if you want to enjoy gaming experience or online streaming or watch fast-paced action, then you should never go for TV less than 120Hz. If TV has less than 120Hz, then it can result in blurred images, colour bleed across the screen.
7. LED Screen Type
Based on diode configuration, LED screen types are mentioned as direct lit, edge lit and full array.
- Edge Lit TVs LEDs – They are usually places along the TV edge to face the screen centre to light the image.
- Full Array LED TVs – In this case, several LEDs cover throughout the back of television. As there are more LEDs in full array TV, local dimmer is finer and generates darker, deep and rich images which provides life like watching experience.
- Direct Lit TV – Several LED rows are placed behind the screen surface. But they don’t generate any local dimming. This why the picture on Direct Lit have lower quality and more grey tones, instead of deep true blacks.
8. RAM
It is an integral specification to consider before purchasing a TV. RAM helps the apps to download much faster. So, higher the RAM better the performance. In the present market, most of the manufacturers are increasing the RAM in their TVs ranging from 1 GB to as much as 2 or 3 GB.
9. Audio Output and Sound Quality
While analysing this factor, you can consider the rule – higher the wattage, louder and clear will be the audio output. Usually, TVs with 10-watt speakers are suitable for small to medium sized rooms. Whereas 15, 20 and 25 watt speakers provide audio experience to next level.
Most of the flat screen TVs have ultra-slim profiles so there is no enough space for placing large speakers that are capable of producing rich sound and clear audio required for dialogue heavy scenes. In most of the TVs, speakers are usually present at the bottom of screen and in some they are present in middle of rear end to help spreading of sound. Either way, it is the best to achieve impactful and clear audio.
For TV viewing experience, better audio quality, choose TVs that have speakers with Dolby Digital or DTS audio (most popular surround sound formats). These two are capable of providing high detail audio output to the use. Or else, you can purchase a soundbar or home theatre.
Most of the home theatres and soundbars available in India are compatible with DTS and Dolby Digital.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS support 5.1 home theatres (home cinema system with 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer). Some advanced options can support 7.1 channels (HD surround, overhead speakers with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos).
10. Connectivity
Never forget to check the TV’s connectivity before making the purchase. You have to make sure there are enough and right input and output types for supporting the video/audio gear.
-
HDMI Ports
These ports will let you connect the TV to gaming consoles, set up box and others. Most of the smart TVs come with 2 HDMI ports. However, it is better to have an extra one just in case. Never settle ports less than 2 as it can be a hindrance in the future.
-
USB Ports
Using these ports, it will be easy to connect the TV to pen drives or other streaming devices. Make sure the TV you choose has at least two USB ports for better and smoother experience. If you choose a TV with only one port, then you may have to just disconnect one device to use another.
-
Ethernet Port
If you want to connect the TV to an LAN connection, then having Ethernet port is very important. If you have LAN requirement and doesn’t have the port to connect, then you have to purchasing additional wireless option to connect the same.
-
3.5mm Port
If you want to connect headsets or earphones to TV, then you need this port. This is very important, especially if you love to watch TV at night and don’t want to disturb your family in the house. This is a great option if the TV is not compatible with Bluetooth.
-
VGA Port
It is suitable for connecting laptop to the smart TV. Though, it can be done using HDMI, having this extra option is always better.
11. Warranty
Just like any other gadget, checking warranty is very essential. Most of the A+ grade LED TVs in India provide at least 1-year warranty from the date purchased. Some even provide extended warranty – the longer the better it is.
Difference LCD/ LED/ OLED/QLED/ Mini LED/ Micro LED
These are basically examples of transmission displays. These depend on the backlight for their light source which then passes through the matrix and colour filters
- OLED: Organic light-emitting diode. this occurs when the pixels are not producing any lights and it goes perfectly dark. This does not suffer from any light bleeds and can show the deepest truest black, perfect for watching space scenes.
- Micro-LED:This uses a modular design that lets you build TV of up to 17 feet tall and with a resolution of 16 megapixels. This has the brightest display techs. But only Samsung and Sony sell this.
- LCD:LCD stands for liquid crystal display. This is the name of a matrix used to create all transmissive displays. LCD panels are used by the other transmission displays to create the images that you see. The difference comes down to the backlight used and whether quantum dots have been used or not.
- LED TV:LED TVs use LEDs as their backlight instead of CCFLS. These are more energy-efficient and depending on how many LEDs are being used it can control the brightness of the image.
- Mini LED:Mini LEDs are very small and a 75 inch TV can fit 25000 of them in it. This can bring brightness and contrast closer to OLED’s emissive pixels.
- QLED: This is basically an LED or mini LED that has added a layer of quantum dots embedded behind the LCD matrix. When quantum dots are added to the LED display, they increase the brightness and help create more natural colours by compensation of blue light that most LEDs emit.
Display technology
With display technology, you will hear words like A grade panel and IPS panel
- A grade panel:Manufacturers rate the TV panel after many quality checks to ensure that the consumers don’t complain and the best service is provided to them. The panel is tested for scratches, mark spots, leakage and other kinds of damages. And depending on the faults the panel is graded A+, A, B or C.A grade panel is considered to be best. This is considered to be the best model for TVs and laptops. Though it is difficult to make transparent panel it either has a blackish tinge or shine which can be difficult to remove.
- IPS panel:There are usually three types of panel used in devices. TN (Twisted nematic), VA (Vertical Alignment) and IPS (In-plane switching). VA and IPS are more widely used while TN is an outed version.IPS panels are most recommended; they give a wide viewing angle and high response time. LG is a large supplier of IPS LCD TV
Advantages of LED TVs
- Constant innovation: LED TVs have become a common product in most urban areas. Brands like Vu, Shinco and Kodak offer low price ranges along with many beneficial features.
- Viewing angles: As compared to LCD TVs, the backlight features in LED TVs make them much higher in terms of better viewing angles.
- Brightness: Unlike traditional TVs that use fluorescent bulbs LED TVs work on lighting arrangements that give brighter images.
- Consistency: LED TVs have been able to preserve their colour quality rates for several more years relative to LCDs or Plasma Panel TVs.
- Energy Efficient: LEDs are more energy-efficient and long-lasting. Since the sources hardly heat up so they require less energy.
- Dimming and Better Picture Contrast: These TVs are lit by many little LED lights. They uniformly spread the light behind the screen. And each of these lights can be manipulated. This helps the TV to automatically dim certain regions and provide a better picture contrast.
Disadvantages of LED TVs
- Led TVs are more expensive and consume 100W more energy compared to LCD TVs.
