Top 12 Best Water Purifier Reviews in India 2020

1. Eureka Forbes Aquasure from Aquaguard Water Purifier

Eureka Forbes Aquasure Water Purifier

A trusted brand over 35 years, Eureka Forbes has been successful in making its way into every Indian household. With years of research and development to make potable water safe and reliable, Eureka Forbes presents Aquasure Smart Plus water purifier from Aquaguard.

One of their latest advancement in this sector, the Aquasure Smart Plus is powered by the universal UV+RO+MTDS technology which purifies water from different sources of supply such as borewells, tanks and taps. Working through six different stages of purification, the water purifier has the capability of providing 30 litres of clean and safe water every hour. And that’s why it is our top pick here!

Stage 1: Water undergoes the clarity cartridge filtration process where the I-filter removes larger suspended particles such as sand and dirt from water.

Stage 2: The chemi block filter captures excess chlorine, finer impurities, pesticides and foul odour before moving to the enhancing process in the next stage.

Stage 3: As mentioned, the water now passes through a membrane life enhancer that prevents the scaling of calcium and magnesium salts and enhances the life and quality of the RO membrane.

Stage 4:  The RO filtration process reduces TDS; removes infectious biological agents such as bacteria, parasites and cysts along with the traces of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Stage 5: The RO purified water now passes through the taste enhancer cartridge (post carbon filter) that polishes the water by removing organic residues and giving it a cleaner, sparkling look and taste.

Stage 6: The last step involves UV rays disinfecting the RO water.

The smart build and superior design of the purifier make it a compact appliance that can be easily installed in any corner of the kitchen. However, the Aquasure Smart Plus comes with a large 6-litre capacity tank which gets replenished within 15 minutes once the tank is emptied. The purifier also comes with a 6000 litres smart cartridge that gives a year long carefree protection.

Smart LED indicators represent purification process, water pressure and water supply using different colours. The Smart Plus water purifier comes with an auto off feature that helps in switching off the power when the tank has reached its capacity, thus, saving energy.

Water Purifier Buying Guide

Water purifiers are an essential commodity in every household. But, what makes a water purifier adequate to spend a whole lot of money on? What are the factors one should contemplate on in order to choose the best water purifier? This comprehensive guide is going to answer all the necessary questions to help you decide on the perfect water purifier for your home.

Sources of Water

It is important to understand the source of water which you wish to purify. Your water supply unit could be groundwater, tap water, borewell or portable tankers. Each of these water sources has their own unique composition. The nutrients, contaminants and the molecular composition differ accordingly. This also helps in determining the TDS level set by the government which facilitates you to compare and decide on the most suitable water purifier.

Types of Impurities

Types of Impurities

The quality of water depends upon the source of water and their composition. One can commonly find impurities such as pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, microbial entities and dissolved organic compounds. Pure water is tasteless, odourless, soft and complete with hydration.

When the glaciers melt to give rise to streams and rivers, they are in their purest form. However, over a period of flow, water comes in contact with natural minerals such as iron, fluorides, magnesium, chlorine and sodium. Needless to say, the buildup of such minerals can prove harmful to the human body over a period of time. Adding to this, the influx of sewage, industrial effluents and dumping of trash leads to contamination of the water with harmful chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, radiological hazards and microorganisms!

High level buildup of dissolved salts and volatile organic compounds can cause illness and damage to the human body. Thus, it is essential to keep a check on the level of such impurities. Government sets a Total Dissolved Salts (TDS) level corresponding to the source of water. Generally, rainwater, groundwater and stream water have low levels of TDS compared to stored tank or tap water.

TDS is largely used to calculate the hardness/softness of the water based on its impurities. Some of the common components that form TDS are anions, cations, calcium, phosphate, nitrate, mercury, lead, arsenic, fluorides, iron and other heavy metals. TDS is always represented by parts per million (ppm) unit. Every RO purifier usually comes with a TDS controller that checks the level from time to time in order to provide you with clean and safe water. If the TDS value is between 50-300 ppm, water is considered to be safe for consumption. Although each purifier has its own capability of reducing the TDS level, most of them reduce impurities from water with up to 1800 ppm of TDS.

Source TDS Level Filter
Municipal Water Supply 1 – 200 PPM UV and UF
Ground Water Supply 200 – 2000 PPM UV+UF+RO
Multiple Sources 1 – 2000 PPM UV+UF+RO+ TDS Regulator

River water, borewell and damaged pipes have un-dissolved physical impurities such as sand, dirt and silt making the water appear murky and turbid. Borewell and sea water contain dissolved inorganic salts such as sodium and potassium. This explains their salty/brackish taste. Borewell and river water also contain dissolved inorganic compounds such as magnesium and calcium that leads to the scale formation during the filtration process. Lakes, ponds and wells have organic compounds resulting in foul odour and bad taste. Municipal pipe waters and tankers have excessive chlorine and microbial entities such as bacteria, viruses and cysts leading to many water-borne diseases and bitter taste.

Types of Purification

There are different water purification processes and technologies based on which the water purifiers function.

1. Reverse Osmosis

The most common type of water purification technology that is inculcated in a modern day purifier! Reverse osmosis (RO) is ideal for purifying water with high TDS levels. Generally, in an osmosis process, water is passed through a membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high solute concentration. In order to trap the finest of impurities, water purifiers undertake the reverse osmosis concept.

Using a very thin RO membrane ( measuring up to 5 microns), water is passed from high solute concentration (high level of TDS) to low solute concentration (low TDS) with the help of an external pressure. Since, the water molecules are very small, they easily pass through the membrane trapping dissolved impurities such as salts and traces of heavy metals. The trapped impurities are then sent to a separate tank which along with some of the input water forms the RO waste water that is discarded.

Although RO purification delivers pure and safe water to drink, it does have some drawbacks such as it produces a lot of waste water which is in fact higher than the quantity of purified water. Also, it requires constant supply of electricity to undergo purification.

2. Ultrafiltration (UF)

Similar to the RO process, UF works on the same principle except this process does not need any supply of electricity. Since, the process uses a membrane with larger pores, application of external force is not required. Gravity takes care of it. It does not even produce much waste water. The only drawback would be that due to the large pores on the membrane, ultrafiltration removes physical impurities and suspended solids such as dust, sand, bacteria and cysts but not dissolved impurities such as heavy metals. Thus, this process is not suitable for water with higher TDS levels.

3. Ultraviolet Purification

This technology uses high intensity UV rays to disinfect the water from microbial impurities such as bacteria, parasites, viruses and protozoa. Similar to ultrafiltration, UV purification fails to remove dissolved impurities. Thus, it is recommended only for water with low TDS values. UV technology is often bought and sought as a secondary or an extra step along with RO technology and activated carbon filtration. That way, UV helps in disinfecting the water while the other two works towards removing the dissolved impurities.

4. Gravity Based Purification

For the most basic purification of water choose the gravity based purifiers. These purifiers utilize candle filters or sediment filters that remove only suspended solids and un-dissolved impurities. Such filters are suitable for tap/faucet water. Generally, gravity based purifiers come with two storage tanks, one for the input/impure water that also holds the candle and an output water/storage tank. Needless to say, these filters are ideal for low level TDS water and microbes free water.

Other things to consider before buying a water purifier

Water Purifier Buying Guide

  • Flow Rate

Setting up an ideal flow rate could be dicey. Trust reputed brands in determining the optimal flow rate of purified water. Higher flow rate can result in unsuccessful purification of the water while slower flow rate takes a lot of time to give you one litre of water. Both the cases will pose a major problem to your family. Hence, go through the specifications of the water purifiers carefully and look out for the purified water flow rate. Ideally, a purifier should give you anywhere between 12-15 litres/hour.

  • Storage Capacity

Now that we know the importance of the rate of flow of water, we will need an ideal storage tank of appropriate capacity to store the purified water. If unreliable water supply or frequent power cuts are an issue in your area, at least a 6-litre storage capacity tank is required for a nuclear family. This also ensures that you have some tasty, purified and safe water to drink whenever you require. Also, reputed brands build their storage tanks using food grade plastic to prevent any further contamination of the purified water.

  • TDS Controller

As already mentioned, the importance of a TDS controller cannot be stressed enough. Generally, all the RO+UV+UF technology based purifiers have a TDS controller to keep a check on the level of dissolved salts and minerals you consume. Compare and verify the TDS safety levels suggested by the government and the capacity of the purifier for a safe and clean water consumption.

  • Weight

Though it’s considered insignificant, weight of the purifier matters. Water purifiers can weigh anywhere between 5-12 kgs. Lighter purifiers are ideal for wall mounting, thus saving space in the kitchen. On the other hand, heavier ones need an allocated space on your kitchen counter.

  • Display Indicators

All the modern day purifiers come with LED indicators that represent different aspects of the product such as tank full/empty, purification on, auto shut-off, filter change alert, UV lamp fail alert etc. These indicator help in the maintenance of the product which in turn improves the shelf-life!

  • Build

The build of the purifiers play an important role in conserving and preventing any further contamination of the purified water. The design undoubtedly adds to the decor of the kitchen, the material used ensures hygiene and durability. The most commonly used materials are aluminum and ABS. it is advisable to avoid aluminium tanks and storage as they tend to facilitate scale buildup during the purification process.

  • Miscellaneous

Check for the certification, installation, customer service, and maintenance of your selected water purifier before buying it. WQA certification and a gold seal mark for the RO+UV are a must. The purifier should have a low maintenance cost. Filters will have to be changed periodically. Apart from this, your purifier shouldn’t be costing you any money after its purchase. Trusted brands generally offer free installations and warranty of at least a year since the time of the purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions?

1. How to check if the RO is producing excess waste water?

A major drawback of using a RO purifier is that you end up producing a lot of waste water. For every 25% of purified water produced, 75% flushes out as a waste water. In case you feel your RO is generating a lot of waste water, check your TDS level. Lower the TDS level, higher the generation of waste water. Furthermore, water with less than 150 TDS values is not good for health as it is devoid of all the essential salts and minerals. Once you find that the TDS level are low, manually change them using the TDS controller on your purifier.

2. What is the shelf-life of a water purifier?

A good trusted brand with all the necessary certifications work impeccably for about 5-7 years. Although frequent filter changes are needed. Factors such as supply water quality, filter, maintenance and mechanism also play an important role in determining its shelf-life.

3. How long can one store water in the purifier tank?

Although most of the brands use food grade plastic to build their storage tanks, it is advisable to use consume the water within three days of purifying it.

4. Electric or non-electric purifiers. Which is better?

Functionality of both the purifiers are the same but differ from each other when it comes to the flow rate, form of filter used and storage. RO+UV filters work best with high TDS level water. However, they need constant supply of electricity and water. RO purifiers even waste a lot of water. On the other hand, non-electric/gravity based filters save water and electricity while their functionality limits only to water with low TDS level.

5. Are TDS and hardness of water the same?

Hardness constitutes a part of TDS but not the other way round. Hardness basically represents the measure of calcium and magnesium salts in water. Whenever hard water percolates, limescale buildup in the tank/membrane can be observed. TDS is the measure of total dissolved salts which constitutes of both organic and inorganic compounds. The dissolved salts include lead, fluorides, sodium, potassium and other minerals along with calcium and magnesium.

Rising levels of contamination in the water sources are of a great concern. Buying a water purifier is inevitable to lead a healthy life. As it is always known, prevention is admired over negligence. The guide covers all the points one requires to analyze the right water purifier for your home.
